St. John's 4    Binghamton 3 ot

A thrilling Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena turned sour at 3:44 of overtime when Harold Druken’s second goal of the game provided the St. John’s Maple Leafs with a 4-3 win over the Binghamton Senators.

Druken’s game-winner disappointed the 4,292 fans in attendance and came on the heels of Kyle Wellwood’s game-tying marker with just 1:10 remaining in regulation to knot the score at 3-3.

With the Sens holding a 3-2 lead on Andy Hedlund’s first goal in 35 games, a power play score at 14:10 of the third period, the Leafs called their timeout with 1:16 left in regulation and pulled goaltender Jamie Hodson for a sixth attacker.

Six seconds later, amidst a goal mouth pile-up that left Sens netminder Ray Emery underneath a pile of bodies, Wellwood lifted a rebound up and around the traffic jam to send the contest to overtime.

Binghamton had several outstanding chances to win the game in the overtime that featured eight shots on goal combined (5-3 Binghamton), but Druken spoiled the party as his wrister eluded Emery from the left wing circle at 3:44.

The up tempo contest saw the Sens outshoot the Leafs 39-31.  Jamie Hodgson kept the Leafs in the game early while Emery put on a goaltending clinic in the second period in keeping St. John’s at bay despite 15 shots.

David Hymovitz notched the game’s first goal at 5:57 of the second period when he batted a Peter Smrek rebound past Hodson for the only goal of the frame.  Smrek and Josh Langfeld set the goal up as Langfeld matched a career-high five-game point streak with the helper.

The Leafs erased that deficit with a pair of goals in the opening 5:01 of the third on markers from Druken and Brad Leed.

Aaron Gavey wired a perfect centering feed on to the tape of Leeb who buried it for the Leafs first lead of the night.

Serge Payer followed up on a Tony Tuzzolino shot and lifted the tying goal off the cross bar before Hedlund’s power play score gave the Sens their final lead of the night.

The season-high seven-game homestand continues Wednesday night when the Norfolk Admirals call on the Sens in a 7:05 p.m. draw at the Arena.

Wednesday’s contest is the first Press & Sun Bulletin Score-4 Fun Pack Night as fans can purchase (4) tickets, (4) hot dogs, and (4) sodas at the special price of $49.00.

Score-4 fun Packs are available for all Monday and Wednesday regular season home games (except December 31st) at the Center Ice Team Shop at Metrocenter and the Sens’ Executive Offices on the third floor of the Arena.
