Phantoms Trip Sens In Overtime 1-0

James Laux scored twenty-three seconds into overtime for the game’s only goal as the Philadelphia Phantoms shut out the Binghamton Senators 1-0 Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

The 17th sellout crowd of the season (4,717) went home disappointed as Laux blasted his third goal of the year past a screened Ray Emery (29 saves) on the glove hand side, allowing the Phantoms to bump their division lead to four points over Bridgeport, a 3-1 loser in Norfolk.

Philadelphia scored on the only shot of the sudden death period and held a 30-23 advantage for the game.

Phantoms goaltender Antero Niittymaki made 23 stops for his sixth shutout of the year.

Both clubs were scoreless on the power play, Philadelphia in four attempts, Binghamton in five.

The Sens gained a point in the standings for the overtime loss, but dropped to fifth place with 73 points, one back of Norfolk.  Binghamton did gain a point on sixth place Hershey as the Bears dropped a 3-0 decision at home to Manchester to remain at 72 points.

The loss extended Binghamton’s losing streak to three games as the club will now embark on a four-game stint away from home beginning next weekend in Norfolk.

The Sens battle the Admirals Friday and Saturday at the Scope in Virginia before completing the weekend with a Sunday night match in Philadelphia.  Binghamton then closes its regular season road schedule Wednesday, April 7th, at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
