Amerks Knock Off Sens 5-3

Domenic Pittis scored twice and set up another to lead the Rochester Americans to a 5-3 over the Binghamton Senators Friday night in front of 7,857 fans at Blue Cross Arena.

The loss snapped the Sens’ three-game winning streak and dropped the club two points behind Wilkes-Barre in the race for the final playoff spot in the East Division.

The Amerks finally beat Billy Thompson (41 saves) on their second power play in the first period following Wednesday’s 39-save shutout by Thompson in the 1-0 win over the Rochester.

Domenic Pittis beat Thompson on a loose puck to the right of the Sens cage and stuffed home his 13th of the year on feeds from Chris Taylor and Paul Gaustad at 14:58 for the period’s only marker.

A chippy first period featured 103 minutes in penalties, 65 to Binghamton, including four ejections.

Cory Pecker, making his B-Sens debut, was given a major for goaltender interference and a game misconduct and Rochester goaltender Ryan Miller (two saves in 3:45) was tagged with a match penalty for hitting Pecker with his blocker pad 3:45 into the game.

At 6:58, Serge Payer dropped the gloves with Steve Lindgren.  With their fight in progress, Jan Platil and Jeff Hutchins also mixed it up and subsequently received game misconducts.

Throw in an injury to Brad Tapper off of a cross check by Doug Mrozik in that same dust up, and the Sens were minus three skates just under seven minutes into the game.

Peter Smrek tied the game at 1-1 with a blue line shot that snuck through the pads of relief goaltender Tom Askey  (23 saves) at 2:16 of the middle period.

But the Amerks countered with a pair as Nathan Paetsch cleaned up on a rebound for his second of the year at 8:37 and Pittis got his second of the game at 16:23 to put the Amerks up by a 3-1 count entering the final period.

Chris Taylor and Jason Pominville added third period goals for the Amerks while Serge Payer (shorthanded) and Arpad Mihaly netted markers for the Sens.

Taylor's goal, just his fourth of the season, held up as the game-winner and came only sixteen seconds into the third period as his drive from the high slot snuck under the cross bar, putting the Rochester up 4-1.

Binghamton travels to Wilkes-Barre, PA, to take on the Penguins Saturday night in a 7:05 faceoff at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
