B-SENS WEEKLY

LAST WEEK…

Tuesday, Dec. 28: Binghamton 1, Hershey 6
Shots: Binghamton 22, Hershey 25
PP: Binghamton 1 for 4, Hershey 0 for 1

The B-Sens played a rare, Tuesday evening tilt at the Giant Center last week. The game marked the return of goaltender Mike Brodeur, who appeared in goal for the Senators for the first time since the Oct. 8 home opener. Unfortunately for Brodeur and his B-Sens’ teammate, the return was less than stellar as the Bears cruised on to a 6-1 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 10,547. Kyle Greentree led the offense for the Bears, tallying a pair of goals and an assist. Kaspars Daugavins scored the lone Binghamton goal, assisted by Corey Locke and Andre Benoit.

Friday, Dec. 31: Albany 5, Binghamton 4
Shots: Albany 39, Binghamton 32
PP: Albany 2 for 8, Binghamton 2 for 4

The B-Sens dropped their second straight game as they fell to the visiting Albany Devils in the traditional New Year’s Eve tilt. Bobby Butler, Kaspars Daugavins, Colin Greening and Ryan Keller all notched goals for the Senators. B-Sens’ defenseman Derek Smith tallied three assists. Barry Brust tended goal for Binghamton stopping 34 of the 39 shots he faced. Albany forward Alexander Vasyunov put forth a four-point performance as he racked up a pair each of goals and assists in the match.

Saturday, Jan. 1: Binghamton 3, Charlotte 0
Shots: Binghamton 29, Charlotte 32
PP: Binghamton 1 for 3, Charlotte 0 for 3

The B-Sens made their first ever trip to the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte on New Year’s Day, kicking off 2011 with a shutout victory over the East Division rival Checkers. Barry Brust manned the pipes for Binghamton, turning away all 32 Charlotte shots on his way to earning his fourth shutout of the season, while Kaspars Daugavins, Mike Hoffman and Ryan Keller each registered goals for the Senators.

Sunday, Jan. 2: Binghamton 2, Charlotte 4
Shots: Binghamton 36, Charlotte 27
PP: Binghamton 1 for 5, Charlotte 1 for 3

The Checkers enacted some revenge on Binghamton, doubling up on the Senators in a Sunday matinee. Charlotte net minder Justin Pogge stopped 34 of 35 B-Sens’ shots, while Oskar Osala (one goal, two assists) and Jon Matsumoto (one goal, one assist) each put forth multi-point performances in the Checkers’ victory. Andre Benoit and Ryan Keller each scored goals for Binghamton.

Record:16-16-2-2

Standings:The B-Sens are fifth place in the East Division (36 points).

THIS WEEK…

Friday, Jan. 7 vs. Syracuse Crunch (Anaheim Ducks)

The B-Sens will look to continue their success against the rival Crunch as they welcome their East Division rivals to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena for the fifth of eight games between the two teams this season. Three of the B-Sens six shutouts this season have come against the Crunch. Overall the Senators have outscored Syracuse 17-2 in their past four meetings. The Crunch trail the B-Sens in the standings by only four points, as they enter the week holding a 14-18-1-3 record, good for 34 points. The Crunch will be without gritty forward Jon Mirasty, who was assigned to the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL last week. Prior to his assignment to the Jackals, Mirasty had amassed 32 penalty minutes in four games against the B-Sens.

Saturday, Jan. 8 vs. Rochester Americans (Florida Panthers)

Saturday night marks the return of the Rochester Amerks to Binghamton. The B-Sens hold a slight edge over the North Division’s Amerks, having gone 2-1-0-1 against Rochester so far this season. The teams last met at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester on Dec. 19, a 3-2 B-Sens victory. The Amerks (17-17-2-2, 38 points) kicked off their week with a 4-3 win on Tuesday against the Lake Erie Monsters. Michal Repik ranks first among all Rochester players in points (7+28=35). Repik tallied a goal and an assist in Tuesday’s victory over Lake Erie.

Promotions: The B-Sens will wear Ottawa throwback jerseys. The MeiGrey Group will be on hand to authenticate the jerseys, which will be auctioned off via auctions.nhl.com. MeiGrey will also have a display of authentic, game-worn jerseys from various teams on the Arena concourse that night.

Also, the first 2,000 fans in attendance of Friday’s game will receive a B-Sens noise drum, courtesy of Amphenol.
Sunday, Jan. 9 @ Providence Bruins (Boston Bruins)

The B-Sens will face the Atlantic Division’s Bruins for the first of a pair of games between the two teams this season. The B-Sens are 6-7-1-0 all-time against Providence. The Bruins’ roster features former Binghamton Senator, Brian McGrattan. In 19 games with Providence, McGrattan has recorded one goal and amassed 41 penalty minutes. The Bruins enter the week having gone 4-6-0-0 in their last ten games and currently hold a home record of 4-11-1-1.

SENS SNIPPETS…

Goaltender Barry Brust earned his fourth shutout of the season on Saturday against Charlotte. He is currently tied second overall among his American Hockey League peers in shutouts this season. He is also now tied with Brian Elliott and Chris Holt for third place on the B-Sens list of all-time shutout leaders.

Forward Kaspars Daugavins has recorded points in seven of the last eight games he has played. Daugavins scored goals in three of four B-Sens game last week, helping him to earn the longest goal scoring streak of any B-Sens player so far in the 2010-11 season. Daugavins scored goals in five straight games, beginning Dec. 19 in Rochester and ending Saturday in Charlotte.
