THIS WEEK…

Friday, Jan. 22 vs. Adirondack Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers)

Binghamton enters Friday’s match against Adirondack with a 2-1-0-0 record versus the Phantoms. In three of ten meetings between the two teams, the B-Sens have outscored their opponent 14-3. The Senators are hoping to outscore the Phantoms Friday and gain some ground in the East Division. Adirondack enters
the week with a 20-18-2-0 record, good for 42 points and is tied with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for third in the East. Leading scorer, Jonathan Matsumoto (17 goals, 16 assists in 40 games played) will return to the team having participated in the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic, where he had the best performance in the Ducks Unlimited Accuracy Shooting contest, hitting all four targets on five shots.

Saturday, Jan. 23 vs. Bridgeport Sound Tigers (New York Islanders)

The B-Sens welcome the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena for the second and final meeting between the two teams on Saturday. The teams last faced off in a Columbus Day matinee Oct. 12 which ended in a 3-2 over time victory for the Sound Tigers. Greg Mauldin, a former B-Sen, scored the game winner that day and is currently tied for the lead in points on the team with 27 (15 G, 12 A) in 42 games played.  The Sound Tigers enter the week winless in four.

Promotions: Join the B-Sens for their Third Annual Star Wars night! Members of the area Star Wars clubs will entertain hockey fans attending the game versus Bridgeport beginning at 6 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to have their photos taken with characters from the Star Wars universe and Darth Vader will drop the ceremonial first puck. Be sure to check out the clubs’ tables on the concourse, where they will be selling Star Wars themed goodies, with proceeds going to benefit A Room to Heal.

SENS SNIPPITS.

Ryan Keller earned the B-Sens’ nomination as the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 17. Keller recorded four goals and one assist for five points in two games played.  The Saskatoon, Sask. native posted back-to-back two goal games (Friday vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Saturday vs. Springfield).  He is ranked third overall on the B-Sens in points with 33 (17 G, 16 A) in 32 games played.

Goaltender Mike Brodeur and forward Zack Smith are both currently on recall to the parent Ottawa Senators, where they put up big weeks themselves. Brodeur is undefeated in the NHL. He posted a 2-0 shutout, the first of his young NHL career, versus the New York Rangers Thursday, Jan. 14. He now has a 3-0 record with a 1.00 goals-against average and .970 save percentage.

Smith’s goal Saturday, Jan. 16 versus Montreal was his first NHL goal. It was only the third time in Ottawa Senators history that a player’s first NHL goal came short handed. Trent McCleary did it on Oct. 26, 1995, as did Antoine Vermette on Dec. 4, 2003.
