On a Friday that saw a flurry of player movement, the B-Sens welcomed the Portland Pirates to town. Despite losing leading scorer Martin St. Pierre and Zack Smith on recall to Ottawa earlier in the day, the B-Sens went on to win 4-3. Denis Hamel notched two goals in the win, including his team leading ninth power play goal. Rookies Keegan Dansereau and Brandon Svendsen rounded out the scoring for Binghamton, while blue liners Derek Smith and Craig Schira each recorded two assists. Mike Brodeur tended goal for the B-Sens, making 34 saves.

Standings:The B-Sens are tied for fourth place in the East division (36 points)

THIS WEEK…

Friday, Jan. 15 vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins)

The B-Sens welcome the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for only the second time at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena this season this coming Friday. Binghamton is still seeking their first win against the Penguins this season. The teams last met in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 30, a convincing 6-3 win for the Penguins. The Pens have won seven of their last 11 games played and are powered by leading scorers Dustin Jeffrey (12 G, 29 A) and Mark Letestu (12 G, 21 A). Wilkes-Barre enters the week without forward Luca Caputi, currently on recall to Pittsburgh, who has put up five points in three games versus the B-Sens this season (2 G, 3 A).

Saturday, Jan. 16 vs. Springfield Falcons (Edmonton Oilers)

The B-Sens welcome the Springfield Falcons for the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Falcons enter the week at the bottom of the league with an 11-21-8-2 record. They are ranked eighth in the Atlantic Division with 32 points and are the third most penalized team in the league with 916 penalty minutes. All-time the B-Sens hold the upper hand versus the Falcons having gone 12-7-0-1 in 20 games. The Falcons feature defenseman Jean-Francois David, a familiar face for B-Sens fans. David spent the better part of the 2006-07 season with the Senators, appearing in 44 games and recording 5 goals, 14 assists and 62 penalty minutes. David began the season with the Elmira Jackals. He has appeared in three games so far with Springfield.

SENS SNIPPITS

B-Sens captain Denis Hamel played in his 400th game as a Binghamton Senator last Friday versus Portland. Hamel recorded two goals in the B-Sens’ 4-3 win. The B-Sens’ captain is the all-time leader in games played (402), goals (197), assists (176), points (373), power play goals (84), short handed goals (14) and game winning goals (35).

Rookie forward Brandon Svendsen earned the B-Sens’ nomination for the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 10. Svendsen recorded three points in three games (3 G, 0 A). He put forth a two point performance Saturday, versus the Lowell Devils, scoring the B-Sens’ only two goals in the game.

Defenseman Derek Smith continues to prove himself to be an offensive threat. The blue liner recorded two assists in Friday’s 4-3 victory over the Portland Pirates. Smith is fifth overall on the B-Sens in scoring and leads all Binghamton defensemen in points. In 34 games played Smith has recorded six goals and 17 assists. He is ranked 14th overall in the American Hockey League in scoring among defensemen.

Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Lowell was Binghamton’s first regulation loss versus an Atlantic Division team so far this season. The B-Sens are 3-1-1-1 versus Atlantic Division teams. They will face Springfield (Jan. 16) and Bridgeport (Jan. 23) of the Atlantic Division on home ice by the end of the month.

The loss to the Devils also saw the B-Sens tie two and break one all-time record. The B-Sens tied the record for fewest penalty minutes in one game for the fourth time in their history as Svendsen served a minor for tripping at 3:54 of the second period. For the fifth time in their history, Binghamton’s opponent tied the recorded for fewest penalty minutes in one game, serving only two minutes as Cory Murphy sat for hooking at 8:57 of the first. The combined four minutes total in penalties set Binghamton’s all-time record for the fewest penalty minutes combined in one game.

Last week was a whirlwind of movement for the B-Sens. Wednesday, forward Keegan Dansereau was brought up from the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. Friday centers Zack Smith and Martin St. Pierre were recalled by the Ottawa Senators, while Binghamton sent goaltender Andy Chiodo to Elmira and brought up left wing Max Gratchev on a professional try-out contract. Finally on Sunday, the B-Sens added one more, signing Elmira’s leading scorer Justin Donati to a professional try-out contract.

The Binghamton Senators are selling tickets for the upcoming Outdoor Classic versus the Syracuse Crunch at the Grandstand at the New York State Fairground on Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $30 and $40. Fans can place their orders by calling the Binghamton Senators at 607-722-7367 or by visiting the B-Sens executive offices, located on the third floor of the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
