PHANTOMS THANKFUL TO BE OUT OF BINGHAMTON: B-SENS BLANK PHANTOMS

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A Thanksgiving tradition continued in Binghamton Thursday night as the B-Sens welcomed the East Division rival Adirondack Phantoms to town for a holiday tilt.

The game remained scoreless for most of the first period, until Josh Hennessy tipped his fifth goal of the season into the Phantoms net to give the B-Sens the 1-0 lead. Captain Denis Hamel had Adirondack goaltender Nic Riopel tied up in front of the net, freeing Hennessy to tip Erik Karlsson’s shot from the blue line in stick side for the lead.

The B-Sens continued to roll offensively into the second period. At just 2:05 Kaspars Daugavins snuck the puck through traffic and between the pads of Riopel giving Binghamton the 2-0 lead. Tomas Kudelka and Hennessy earned the assists, marking Hennessy’s second point of the game.

Just over two minutes later, Hennessy’s second goal of the night, scored on a wrap around put the B-Sens up 3-0. Geoff Kinrade earned the lone assist on Hennessy’s second tally.

At 5:32 of the period, Drew Bannister snipered a shot from the blue line and into the Adirondack net to give Binghamton the commanding 4-0 lead on the Phantoms.

Riopel was pulled from the Phantoms goal by head coach Greg Gilbert after allowing four goals on 20 shots. Johan Backlund took over between the pipes for Adirondack.

The change in goal did not change the luck of the Phantoms. Just over midway through the second period, Hamel’s shot deflected off an Adirondack defenseman, giving the B-Sens a commanding 5-0 lead. Derek Smith and Karlsson assisted, earning Karlsson his second point of the evening.

Into the third period, the B-Sens went up on the power play 58 seconds in as the Phantoms were assessed a penalty for too many men on the ice. Hamel capitalized quickly, giving the B-Sens a 6-0 lead. Karlsson recorded his third assist in the game, passing to Derek Smith who centered for the captain Hamel. Hamel then blistered the shot past Backlund.

Jim O’Brien put the icing on the cake, scoring his first professional goal with just 32 seconds remaining in the game and sending Binghamton to a 7-0 final over the Phantoms.

Chiodo stopped 34 shots, backstopping his way to his first shutout of the season.

The B-Sens now travel to Toronto to face the North Division’s Marlies Friday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.
