Sens Drop 4-0 Lead, Lose 6-5 in Shootout to Comets

BINGHAMTON, NY – Binghamton fell 6-5 in a shootout to the visiting Utica Comets despite holding a 4-0 lead past the midway point of the second period.  Brandon DeFazio tied the contest at 9:53 of the third period before scoring the decisive shootout goal to give the Comets the huge come-from-behind win.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau gave the Sens the 1-0 lead 11:07 into the opening period when he beat Comets’ starting goaltender Joacim Eriksson shorthanded for his eleventh goal of the year.  Binghamton carried the slim lead into the first intermission as Nathan Lawson stopped all eight shots faced in the period while Eriksson stopped eight of nine.

Binghamton used a three-goal outburst in under a minute and a half to extend its lead to 4-0 less than five minutes into the middle frame.  Pageau notched his second of the night at 3:17 before David Dziurzynski scored his sixth marker of the year less than 30 seconds later.  Mike Sdao’s slap shot from the point at 4:36 gave the Sens a four-goal cushion.  Defenseman Alex Biega put the Comets on the board at 12:03 of the frame when he finished a two-on-one rush from Pascal Pelletier before Ray Kaunisto cut the lead to 4-2 a minute and a half later.  Just past the 15 minute mark of the period Matt Puempel moved Binghamton’s lead to 5-2 on the power-play, but Utica responded with a man-advantage goal of its own at 17:26 cutting the lead to 5-3 heading into the final period.

Alex Friesen made it a one-goal contest 6:25 into the final period before DeFazio beat Lawson shorthanded at the midway point of the third and sent the game to overtime.

Despite outshooting the Comets 8-1, Binghamton failed to convert in the extra frame.  Pelletier and DeFazio converted their shootout attempts while Puempel was the lone Senator to best Joe Cannata, who relieved Eriksson following Binghamton’s fourth goal of the game.

Pageau led Binghamton with two goals while Buddy Robinson and Stephane Da Costa chipped in a pair of assists in the fifth-straight loss for the Sens.  Pelletier, Friesen and Biega all finished with a goal and an assist for Utica while Kellan Lain and Cal O’Reilly added two helpers.  Lawson finished with 24 saves on 29 shots faced while Cannata stopped 27 of 28 shots faced in just over 40 minutes of relief.

Binghamton travels to Syracuse tomorrow for a 3:00p.m. tilt with the Crunch before visiting Rochester Wednesday, March 12, for a 7:00p.m. matchup.  The Sens return to home ice next Friday and Saturday for back-to-back games.  They host the Norfolk Admirals Friday before welcoming Rochester Saturday night with both contests slated for a 7:05p.m. puck drop.  Tickets for either game are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive Office at (607) 722-7367 or stopping in between 9:00a.m. and 5:30p.m.  Fans can also purchase tickets through the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets during normal business hours by visiting
