B-SENS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST BRIDGEPORT

The B-Sens overcame two two-goal deficits pushing the game into a shootout before the Bridgeport Sound Tigers netted three of four shots to secure the extra point and hand Binghamton a 6-5 defeat Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Bridgeport opened the scoring four minutes in when Trevor Smith deflected a shot off a Dustin Kohn slapper from the left point, beating B-Sens netminder Brian Elliott high on his blocker side.

Five minutes later, Jesse Joensuu added to the Sound Tigers early lead when he took a behind the net pass from Blake Comeau and shoveled it past Elliott’s glove hand, making the score 2-0 in favor of the visiting team.

The B-Sens responded one minute later when Peter Regin stole the puck from a Bridgeport defenseman and then walked along the nearside boards meeting Bridgeport’s last man in the zone. Regin split the Sound Tigers defensemen deep in the zone and beat netminder Nathan Lawson with a wrist shot over his right shoulder for a highlight reel goal.

Regin followed with a second goal three minutes later, this one on a B-Sens power play.  Defenseman Tomas Kudelka skated along the blueline with the puck before taking a shot on goal that left a rebound in Denis Hamel’s lap. Hamel saw Regin streaking down the right side towards a wide open net. Regin took the pass through the crease and backhanded home the tying goal.

The Sound Tigers quickly took back the lead when center Kurtis McLean fed Mike Iggulden for his 13th goal of the season.  Iggulden backhanded the shot past Elliott to give the Sound Tigers a 3-2 lead.

Following that goal Elliott was pulled in favor of Jeff Glass after surrendering three goals on six shots.

After Ben Walter gave Bridgeport another two-goal lead seven minutes into the second period, Neil Petruic recorded his first goal of the season for the B-Sens. Ilya Zubov took a pass from fellow winger Danny Bois and found Petruic open at the point. Petruic took a shot that pinballed its way through traffic and past Lawson to close the gap to one goal.

The B-Sens once again found themselves down by two goals midway through the final frame after Joensuu picked up his second goal of the game.

Defensemen Drew Fata scored his second goal of the season when he ripped an uncontested shot from the point that found a home just under the crossbar to bring the deficit to one.  Center Josh Hennessy cycled the puck to defenseman Derek Smith who found Fata for the one-timer.

The Sens got a break with about a minute left when Bridgeport’s Trevor Smith went off for interference giving them a man advantage while also pulling Glass for an extra attacker resulting in a Binghamton six-on-four. The B-Sens made quick work of the power play when Zubov fed Ryan Shannon for the game-tying goal. Shannon, in his first game back with Binghamton after being recalled by Ottawa, took a quick wrist shot beating a diving Lawson, top-shelf to send the game into overtime.

With both teams failing to score in the five minute overtime, the game went to a shootout where the Sound Tigers converted on three of four shootout attempts to take the extra point. McLean, Smith, and Joensuu scored for Bridgeport while the B-Sens lone goal came from Regin.

Jeff Glass turned away 20 of 22 shots in his relief appearance for the B-Sens.  Regin’s two-goal effort was his first AHL game with two markers.  Defenseman Tomas Kudelka set a career-high with two assists, while Denis Hamel extended his point streak to four games (3+2).  Ilya Zubov netted his eighth multi-point game with two helpers.

The B-Sens look to get back into the win column tomorrow night when they take on the Philadelphia Phantoms at 7:05 p.m. Tune into 680 WINR-AM or 1430 WENE-AM 30 minutes before game time for Countdown to Faceoff with Grady Whittenburg, Voice of the B-Sens.  Fans can also tune in to B-Sens’ games via webcast or streaming video cast at www.ahllive.com
