B-SENS, DICKIN MEMORIAL ANIMAL HOSPITAL ASK FANS TO PAWS FOR CAUSE

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators announced today that Mike McKenna and his fellow B-Sens players have partnered with Dickin Memorial Animal Hospital in Johnson City in a season long effort to assist the Southern Tier pet population, dubbed “Paws for Cause”.

For McKenna, rallying his teammates for this season-long initiative came naturally.

“Paws for Cause is a project near and dear to my heart. Pet adoption is something I truly believe in.  I grew up with two cats in the household, one of which was a stray and the other came from the Humane Society. Just over three years ago, my fiancée and I adopted our dog, Bauer, from a no-kill shelter in the St. Louis area. He has been an amazing addition to the family, bringing us joy and laughter on a daily basis. Not knowing his breed hasn’t made a difference to us. We’re just happy to have such a loving friend in the house,” explained McKenna.

The initiative kicks off as Dickin Memorial Animal Hospital debuts the 2012 Binghamton Senators Paws for Cause calendar on Saturday, Dec. 10. The 16-month calendar features photos of B-Sens players, coaches and staff members with their family pets or pets from the area shelters. The limited edition calendars are $20 and available for purchase at the Paws for Cause table on Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena concourse for all upcoming B-Sens home games, while supplies last.

Fans who purchase a calendar will receive an "arm's length" of raffle tickets for a chance to win the opportunity to have their pet photographed with their favorite B-Sens player.  The winner will receive a poster-sized print of that photograph courtesy of Curcio Printing.

Fans who do not wish to purchase a calendar, can purchase a single raffle ticket for $5.

All proceeds from the calendar sales and raffle will benefit the Broome County Humane Society and Project P.A.W.

In conjunction with the calendar, the Binghamton Senators and Dickin Memorial will be partnering for two very special events during the month of December.

  • Friday, Dec. 10 as the B-Sens host the Norfolk Admirals is Paws for Cause Night. Dickin Memorial Animal Hospital, the Humane Society and Project Paw will be on hand with displays on the concourse. Fans will also have the opportunity to bid on pet bowls hand painted by their favorite B-Sens players and coaches. The auction proceeds will benefit the Broome County Humane Society and Project P.A.W.
  • On Monday, Dec. 12 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. McKenna will be joined by Josh Godfrey, Wacey Hamilton, Mike Hoffman, Corey Locke and Bobby Raymond at the Oakdale Mall (601-635 Harry L Drive, Johnson City) for a special pet donation drive and calendar signing. Fans that bring a donation to benefit one of the  area shelters will have the opportunity to meet some of their favorite B-Sens players and have their 2012 Binghamton Senators Paws for Cause calendars autographed. Calendars will be on sale at the event, as well as limited edition Paws for Cause t-shirts.  Acceptable donations include, but are not limited to:
    Leashes
    Kongs and other chew items
    Collars
Dry dog food, cat food, puppy and kitten food
Cleaning Supplies such as paper towels, bleach
Laundry Supplies such as detergent, softner
13 and 39 gallon trash bags

“Dickin Memorial Animal Hospital is thrilled that Mike (McKenna) and his teammates have embraced this cause. The pet population of the Southern Tier needs it now, more than ever. Many local shelters suffered incredible losses in the September floods. Many dogs and cats were abandoned after the floods as their owners were left unable to care for or shelter them,” explained Dr. Alison Beaulieu, owner and veterinarian of Dickin Memorial Animal Hospital.

“In partnering with the Binghamton Senators our hope is to bring awareness to this cause and provide as much support as we can. We also want to call the fans to action. This initiative is just as much about volunteering your time as it is helping to raise money for these shelters.”

McKenna and his B-Sens teammates will continue to support Paws for Cause throughout the season as they volunteer their time at local shelters and participate in adoption events.

“Playing for the Binghamton Senators has given me the unique opportunity to help out initiatives like Paws for Cause. If you are considering a new pet for yourself or your family, please consider adoption. There are so many pets just waiting for their new best friend to walk through the door and take them home,” added McKenna.
