BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Senators couldn’t survive a third period push by the Rochester Americans and fell 5-4 in the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night.
The Senators opened the scoring just under three minutes into the first period. Andreas Englund sent a wrist shot from the left point that was deflected by Zach O’Brien who was playing in his B-Sens debut. Max McCormick picked up the secondary assist on O’Brien’s first goal of the season.
Derek Grant scored his first goal of the night at the 4:09 mark of the opening frame. The former B-Sen finished a breakaway with a backhand through the legs of goaltender Matt O’Connor. Cole Schneider and Matt Bodie both assisted on Grant’s fourth goal of the season.
The B-Sens regained the lead when McCormick scored his 19th goal of the season with 10:23 to play in the period. Phil Varone sent the puck to Jason Akeson who was going into the zone on a rush. Akeson found McCormick who buried the wrister to tie for the team lead in goals. Binghamton took the 2-1 lead to the first intermission while outshooting Rochester 18-9.
Grant struck again with just over five minutes remaining of the second period during a rush down the right hand of the ice that beat O’Connor high stick side. Grant’s second goal of the game and fifth of the season were assisted by Hudson Fasching and Ian Brady to tie the game 2-2.
Binghamton retook the lead almost three minutes later when Nick Paul put home a loose puck and his 13th goal of the season. Casey Bailey deflected a shot from Ben Harpur off the pad of Jonas Johansson right onto the stick of Paul who brought the score to 3-2. The B-Sens went into the final intermission with the lead despite being outshot 31-26.
Max McCormick opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the third period during a short-handed breakaway. Chad Nehring assisted on McCormick’s second goal of the night and 20th of the year.
Rochester responded 16 seconds later to bring it to a one-goal game after Justin Vaive found the back of the night just as the Amerks power play was about to expire. Nick Baptiste and Tim Kennedy recorded the assists on Vaive’s third goal of the season.
Grant completed his hat trick at the 15:44 mark of the final period to tie the game at 4-4. Bodie took a shot from the blue line that went through traffic and Grant deflected in. Schneider had the secondary assist on Grant’s sixth goal of the season.
The Amerks completed the game with less than two minutes to play when Baptiste picked up a puck kicked out from a faceoff and sent it past O’Connor for his 21st goal of the season with assists from Vaive and Kennedy.
O’Connor finished the night with 36 saves while Johansson had 28 stops in the win.
