The B-Sens entered Friday’s match versus the Penguins seeking their first win against the East Division foe in the 2009-10 season. Binghamton finally managed to get one as they went on to win 3-0. Max Gratchev netted his second goal of the season, while Ryan Keller tallied two, his first goals since Nov. 21 vs. Albany. It was also a two-point night for captain Denis Hamel who recorded two assists in the contest. Chris Holt tended goal, stopping all 28 shots he faced to earn the shutout, his third of the season.

Following a scoreless first, 31 seconds into the second period Ryan Keller scored his third goal of the weekend (16th on the season) to give the B-Sens a lead over the Springfield Falcons. The B-Sens weren’t flying high for long though, as Springfield bounced back quickly to defeat the Senators 5-2, earning their third win in 25 games. Keller would go on to record both B-Sens goals in the match. Viacheslav Trukhno notched two goals for the Falcons, while net minder Jean-Phillippe Levasseur stopped 38 of 40 Binghamton shots.

Friday, Jan. 22 vs. Adirondack Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers)
Binghamton enters Friday’s match against Adirondack with a 2-1-0-0 record versus the Phantoms. In three of ten meetings between the two teams, the B-Sens have outscored their opponent 14-3. The Senators are hoping to outscore the Phantoms Friday and gain some ground in the East Division. Adirondack enters
the week with a 20-18-2-0 record, good for 42 points and is tied with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for third in the East. Leading scorer, Jonathan Matsumoto (17 goals, 16 assists in 40 games played) will return to the team having participated in the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic, where he had the best performance in the Ducks Unlimited Accuracy Shooting contest, hitting all four targets on five shots.
Saturday, Jan. 23 vs. Bridgeport Sound Tigers (New York Islanders)
The B-Sens welcome the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena for the second and final meeting between the two teams on Saturday. The teams last faced off in a Columbus Day matinee Oct. 12 which ended in a 3-2 over time victory for the Sound Tigers. Greg Mauldin, a former B-Sen, scored the game winner that day and is currently tied for the lead in points on the team with 27 (15 G, 12 A) in 42 games played. The Sound Tigers enter the week winless in four.
Promotions: Join the B-Sens for their Third Annual Star Wars night! Members of the area Star Wars clubs will entertain hockey fans attending the game versus Bridgeport beginning at 6 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to have their photos taken with characters from the Star Wars universe and Darth Vader will drop the ceremonial first puck. Be sure to check out the clubs’ tables on the concourse, where they will be selling Star Wars themed goodies, with proceeds going to benefit A Room to Heal.

Ryan Keller earned the B-Sens’ nomination as the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 17. Keller recorded four goals and one assist for five points in two games played. The Saskatoon, Sask. native posted back-to-back two goal games (Friday vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Saturday vs. Springfield). He is ranked third overall on the B-Sens in points with 33 (17 G, 16 A) in 32 games played.
Goaltender Mike Brodeur and forward Zack Smith are both currently on recall to the parent Ottawa Senators, where they put up big weeks themselves. Brodeur is undefeated in the NHL. He posted a 2-0 shutout, the first of his young NHL career, versus the New York Rangers Thursday, Jan. 14. He now has a 3-0 record with a 1.00 goals-against average and .970 save percentage.
Smith’s goal Saturday, Jan. 16 versus Montreal was his first NHL goal. It was only the third time in Ottawa Senators history that a player’s first NHL goal came short handed. Trent McCleary did it on Oct. 26, 1995, as did Antoine Vermette on Dec. 4, 2003.

B-SENS BRINGING IT HOME TO THE COMMUNITY…
Saturday, Jan. 23 following their game against Bridgeport, the B-Sens will appear at Flashbacks (93 State St., Binghamton) as celebrity bartenders. All tips earned will be donating to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The event is open to the public. You must be 21 years of age or older to attend.

Sunday, Jan. 24 at 11:30 a.m. select B-Sens will be participating in the Arch Madness charity basketball game at Binghamton University’s Events Center. Your favorite B-Sens will join the Johnson City and Binghamton fire departments’ teams in a friendly game of basketball. All proceeds from the event benefit the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Tickets are $10 and include admission to the 2 p.m. B.U. men’s basketball game versus Vermont. Tickets can be purchase on the concourse the B-Sens’ home games Friday Jan. 22 and Saturday Jan. 23.
