SENS STUN SYRACUSE WITH LATE COMEBACK

The Binghamton Senators battled back from three separate Syracuse Crunch leads and scored the game-tying goal with just four seconds remaining before defeating the Crunch in overtime by a 4-3 final on Wednesday night at the War Memorial at Oncenter.

Syracuse grabbed a 1-0 advantage midway through the opening period off a rebound goal by Matt Kennedy. Kevin Harvey worked the dropped a pass to Grant Clitsome at the point. Clitsome one-timed a shot that bounced off of netminder Jeff Glass and out in front of the crease, where Kennedy tapped it five hole.

Greg Mauldin evened the score for Binghamton less than three minutes into the second stanza. Mauldin advanced up the right boards on a two-on-one break with Peter Regin. Mauldin faked a pass to Regin and snapped a wrist shot over the glove hand of netminder Kevin Lalande.

The Crunch struck quickly in the third period to seize momentum with Maksim Mayorov firing a wrist shot from the top of the right circle through traffic and over the glove hand of Glass. The B-Sens matched that goal two minutes later. Mark Bomersback made it three straight games with a goal when he worked off the end wall and beat Lalande to the left goal post, curling a shot in to knot the game at 2 apiece.

Alexandre Picard gave Syracuse the lead at 13:40 of the final period when the left-winger snuck in behind the Binghamton defense and worked from right to left across the crease, beating Glass on the stick side.

The situation looked bleak for Binghamton in the final minute until rookie Zack Smith found twine to send the game to overtime. After pulling the goaltender for the extra skater, the B-Sens worked the Crunch zone. Defenseman Mattias Karlsson fired a shot from the point that went high and off the glass behind the cage. The puck kicked back out where Smith skating up the slot and buried the rebound past Lalande with just four seconds remaining in regulation.

The B-Sens didn’t waste any time with their second opportunity, scoring the game-winning goal just 32 seconds into overtime off the stick of Peter Regin. Regin took possession of the puck along the far half wall and worked back along the end wall, he curled at the left post and snapped the game winner past Lalande.

Derek Smith extended his point streak to four games (1+3) with an assist on the game-tying goal. Mauldin extended his goal scoring streak to three games (3+1). Glass made 26 saves to earn his 17th win of the season.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the B-Sens (41-28-5-4, 91 pts.) are tied with the Philadelphia Phantoms (42-29-2-5, 91 pts.) for the final playoff spot in the East Division.

The B-Sens return to home ice on Friday night to host the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 p.m. in their final regular season home game. Good seats remain for both nights. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, by calling ticket master at 722-7272, or at the Arena box office inside the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
