SENS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT WITH 4-3 VICTORY OVER ROCHESTER

The Binghamton Senators converted on three of their five power plays and goaltender Jeff Glass made 25 saves to win his third straight game as the B-Sens defeated the Rochester Americans 4-3 Saturday night before a crowd of 4,693 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Fresh off his first professional hat trick, center Peter Regin began the evening’s scoring when he netted a rebound over Rochester goaltender Mike Brodeur’s right leg pad at 6:27 near the left corner.  Left wing Denis Hamel and defenseman Neil Petruic began the scoring sequence, when Hamel passed from the right side boards to Petruic, who took a shot from the top right circle.  Brodeur blocked the shot, but Regin skated in low, picked up the puck, spun around and took aim. The goal earned Petruic his fourth assist of the season and helped extend Hamel’s point streak to ten games (7+6).

Just over six-and-a-half minutes later, Rochester’s Randall Gelech tied the game, when left wing Stefan Meyer fed a pass to the right wing from the far boards, and Gelech wristed the puck to Glass’s left side.

The B-Sens, however, would end the first stanza with a 2-1 lead when left wing Ilya Zubov netted his 13 goal of the season during a power play with one second left in the period.  Defenseman Mattias Karlsson bullied his way in the right corner and freed the puck to Zubov who beat Brodeur’s outstretched glove.

Zubov and Karlsson were at it again in the second period, this time assisting on Josh Hennessy’s 11th—and team leading—power-play goal.  With Rochester’s Mike Caruso in the penalty box for hooking, Karlsson, Hennessy, and Zubov worked the puck around the perimeter, inching their way closer to Brodeur until Zubov pulled the Amerk defenders far enough away from the goalie to allow Hennessy to slip the puck over Brodeur’s left arm.  Hennessy now has markers in three straight games.

The Americans would fight their way back two minutes and 26 seconds later on a 5-on-3 man advantage to make the game 3-2.  Gelech battled two B-Sens along left side boards, knocking the puck to right wing Michael Duco, who then fired a shot near the top of the left circle just under cross bar.

Rochester tied it in the third at 6:43 when left wing Andrew Sweetland hit a pass from center David Brine over Glass’s left blocker.  Two minutes later, though, the B-Sens would seal their third straight home victory on the evening’s 10th and final power play. Once again, Zubov and Karlsson set up the drive, with Zubov finding Karlsson squared at the blue line and center Zack Smith screening Brodeur.  Karlsson lasered the puck through traffic, deflecting off of Smith’s stick just right of Brodeur’s shoulder.

The goal earned Binghamton its seventh straight home win against the Americans and their 12th win over a North Division team.  Glass has won three of four match-ups against the Americans this season, stopping 84 of 90 shots by Rochester in those victories.

Ilya Zubov tallied three points (1+2) for the fifth time this season and Mattias Karlsson tied his career-high with three assists on the night.  Peter Regin now has points (5+9) in eight straight games.

The B-Sens (32-20-5-3, 72 pts.) round out the weekend with a Sunday evening contest against Rochester at Blue Cross Arena, with a 6:05 p.m. start time.  Tune into 680 WINR-AM or 1430 WENE-AM 30 minutes before game time for Countdown to Faceoff with Grady Whittenburg, Voice of the B-Sens.  Fans can also tune in to B-Sens’ games via webcast or streaming video cast at www.ahllive.com
