GAGNE SCORES FIRST AHL GOAL IN 4-2 LOSS TO MARLIES

OTTAWA, ON – The Binghamton Senators fell 4-2 despite a strong final push against the Toronto Marlies in front of 6,220 fans at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

Gabriel Gagne started the game 28 seconds in scoring his first American Hockey League goal of the season. Gagne took advantage of a turnover by Toronto Marlies captain Andrew Campbell that left the puck right in front of the crease. The unassisted backhand put the B-Sens up on the board 1-0 and Binghamton held the lead into the first intermission outshooting Toronto 11-9.

The Marlies retaliated in the second period with a surge that culminated in four unanswered goals.  The first came on an interception by Kasperi Kapanen in the neutral zone at the 9:15 mark.  Kapanen skated with the puck down the right side and beat Chris Driedger on the blocker side for the unassisted goal.

Seth Griffith scored the second Marlies goal just seven seconds on a quick wrist shot from inside the slot. Brett Findlay and Brendan Leipsic were credited with the assists on the tie-breaking goal.

The third goal was scored just past the 15-minute mark after Justin Holl fired a shot from the right hash mark. Former B-Sen Colin Greening deflected the shot into the left side of the net to move the score to 3-1. Kapanen was also credited with an assist on Greening’s ninth goal of the year.

Findlay scored his 10th goal of the season with less than four minutes to play after skating down the right side and aiming a wrist shot that landed top shelf. Mike Sislo assisted on the last goal of the period as the B-Sens went to the final intermission trailing 4-1 despite outshooting Toronto 21-16.

Binghamton cut the lead in half with 1:53 to go in the third period following a rush started by Chris Carlisle. Carlisle dumped a pass into the slot that bounced off the leg of Jason Akeson and into the net.  Casey Bailey was also credited with an assist on Akeson’s 18th goal of the season.

Despite a late push by the B-Sens, the score remained at 4-2 in favor of the Marlies.

Driedger stopped 21 shots in the losing effort while Kasimir Kaskisuo picked up the win with 26 saves.
