Special Teams Keep B-Sens On Top of East Division

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Senators resumed action tonight following the All-Star break with a 6-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.  The special teams led the way as the B-Sens converted on four of nine power-play tries and also tallied a shorthanded goal.  Mike Hoffman, fresh off a stellar All-Star Classic appearance, led the way offensively with two goals and an assist while Andrew Hammond played great between the pipes stopping 33 of 35 shots faced for his 14th win of the season.

Shane Prince scored his 15th goal of the season on the power play giving the B-Sens the lead 8:17 into the opening period off helpers from Andre Petersson and Danny New.  Just over one minute later, Wilkes-Barre tied the game at one apiece when Spencer Machacek put a rebound past Hammond for his 11th goal of the year.  Binghamton regained the lead at the 13:13 mark after Mark Stone stole the puck deep in the Penguins defensive zone and found Corey Cowick who one-timed the puck past starting goaltender Eric Hartzell.  Jean-Gabriel Pageau continued the B-Sens short-handed success when he beat Hartzell for the team’s 15th goal on the penalty kill this season.  The short-handed goal ended Hartzell’s night as Jeff Deslauriers took over netminding duties with 5:20 remaining in the opening period.  With less than one minute to play in the period, Hoffman notched his first goal of the night sending Binghamton to the locker room up 4-1.

The second period brought scoring chances for each team; however, both Deslauriers and Hammond were perfect in keeping the score at 4-1 going into the final period of regulation.

The teams traded power-play goals less than one minute apart in the third period.  First it was Cole Schneider who pushed a loose puck home at 4:56 for his 16th goal of the season before Penguins captain Tom Kostopoulos cut the score to 5-2.  Hoffman scored his second goal of the evening at 8:07 on the power play moving the final score to 6-2.

Including Hoffman, Binghamton had four skaters finish with multi-point nights as Stephane Da Costa, Petersson and Chris Wideman all finished with two assists.  Hartzell, who was credited with the loss, allowed three goals on 13 shots faced before being replaced by Deslauriers who allowed three goals on 24 shots.  Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished one for five on the man advantage.

Binghamton is back on home ice tomorrow when they host the Worcester Sharks for the final game of their two-game series.  Tickets for the game are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive Office at (607) 722-7367 or stopping in between 8:00a.m. until puck drop.  Fans can also purchase tickets through the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets during normal business hours by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or at 1-800-745-3000.
