B-SENS WEEKLY

LAST WEEK…

Friday, Nov. 8: Binghamton 3, Rochester 2 (OT)
Shots: Binghamton 37, Rochester 32
PP: Binghamton 1 for 4, Rochester 0 for 2

Binghamton traveled to Rochester Friday night for their first of three games in three nights.  Andrew Hammond turned in a great 30 save performance and Cody Ceci notched his second overtime-winning goal to give the B-Sens a 3-2 win over the Americans.

Rochester managed 17 first period shots on Hammond, who stopped all but Phil Varone’s tally four minutes into the period.  Americans goaltender Matt Hackett stifled all 11 Binghamton chances during the first 20 minutes of play.

Binghamton came out of the first intermission strong registering 13 shots on goal while holding the Americans to just five chances.  Mike Hoffman tied the game 1-1 at the 15:12 of the middle frame off feeds from Cole Schneider and Fredrick Claesson.  Less than two minutes later Hoffman tallied his second goal of the evening, a power-play marker, putting the visitors ahead 2-1.  Rochester’s Matt Mackenzie tied the game at 2-2 with less than three minutes remaining in the period.

After a scoreless third period the teams moved to overtime where Binghamton struck quick.  Just 1:36 into extra time Ceci received the puck from Tyler Eckford a few feet inside the blueline where he ripped the game-winner past Hackett.  Hammond improved to 2-3-0 for the season with the win.

Saturday, Nov. 9: Rochester 3, Binghamton 7
Shots: Rochester 34, Binghamton 44
PP: Rochester 2 for 6, Binghamton 4 for 6

Saturday brought the Americans to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena for the back end of the home-and-home series.  Binghamton’s offense exploded for seven goals, including going four for six on the extra-man advantage.  Nathan Lawson backstopped the Sens with 31 saves while Stephane Da Costa tied a franchise record with five points (two goals, three assists).
Binghamton’s first three goals of the night came off their power-play opportunities.  Mike Sdao started things off 12:13 into the first period with his first goal of the season off helpers from Mike Hoffman and Da Costa.

Binghamton picked up the second period with two more power-play tallies.  The first came just over three minutes into the middle frame with Da Costa taking a feed in the slot from Chris Wideman beating Rochester’s goaltender Nathan Lieuwen.  Wideman extended the B-Sens lead to 3-0 at the 9:35 mark of the period.  The Americans drew within 3-2 on two unanswered goals— the first at 12:01 of the second off Tim Schaller and the other from Luke Adam just 1:30 into the final period.

Binghamton was able to put the game well out of reach tallying four consecutive third period goals before Rochester added one final power-play goal of their own with under one minute to play ending the game 7-3.

Six B-Sens finished with multi-point games including Da Costa’s five point outing and Hoffman who ended the night with a goal and two assists.  Lieuwen played strong in Rochesters loss making 37 saves while Lawson earned his sixth victory in seven starts this season.

Sunday, Nov. 10: Binghamton 5, Hershey 4 (SO)
Shots: Binghamton 27, Hershey 45
PP: Binghamton 1 for 7, Hershey 2 for 7

Ending their three game weekend on the road, Binghamton outlasted the Hershey Bears for a 5-4 shootout victory Sunday evening.  Jean-Gabriel Pageau lead the B-Sens with one goal and two assists while Andrew Hammond played exceptional stopping 41 of 45 Bears shots.

Hershey started the scoring off 6:18 into the first when Josh Brittain sniped a shot directly off a faceoff win from Peter LeBlanc beating Hammond top right.  Pageau evened the contest 12:33 into the period taking a great feed from Mike Hoffman and putting it pass Bears goaltender Philipp Grubauer.  Hammond played a great first period stopping 22 of 23 shots faced.

Pageau gave Binghamton its first lead of the night when he tallied a power-play goal just under five minutes into the second period.  Darren Kramer extended the B-Sens lead at the 13:50 mark pushing a rebound past Grubauer to make it 3-1 Binghamton.  With two seconds remaining in the period, Hershey capitalized on a two-man advantage when Jeff Taffe beat Hammond cutting the lead to 3-2.

Buddy Robinson scored his second short-handed goal of the season less than five minutes into the third bringing Binghamton’s league-leading shorthanded goal total to six.  However, Hershey never quit scoring two unanswered goals to force the game into overtime.  After a scoreless extra period, the game moved to a shootout.  Stephane Da Costa continued his strong weekend performance converting on Binghamton’s first round attempt.  Matt Puempel’s fourth round attempt beat Grubauer while Hammond stopped four of five Hershey attempts giving the B-Sens the 5-4 victory.
