BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, home of the American Hockey League Binghamton Senators, shined brighter than ever today as local leaders unveiled a slew of new upgrades designed to give fans the ultimate experience as the Arena celebrates its 40th Anniversary.
Senator Tom Libous joined Broome County Executive Debbie Preston and B-Sens Vice President of Operations Tom Mitchell in showing off the newly replaced stadium seats, the state-of-the-art LED lighting system and the newly renovated concession stands.
The upgrades are part of a $2.5 million renovation project designed to not only give the Arena a facelift, but also improve infrastructure and safety for the fans. In addition to comfortable new crimson seats, brighter LED lighting and new concession stands, the renovations include new exterior stairs on the North concourse, a new outside marquee LED display, a new dasher board and glass system for enhanced player and fan safety and two new Zamboni machines. The lighting upgrades are expected to save taxpayers $600,000 in energy costs over the next 10 years.
Senator Libous secured $2 million in funding for the renovations, while County Executive Preston secured the remaining balance through funding from the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council grants.
“These beautiful new upgrades will provide fans with an even better game experience and help attract more top entertainment acts to our community,” said Senator Libous. “They’ll keep the Arena a one-of-a-kind destination for families and fans across the Southern Tier.”
“Over the last 40 years we’ve welcomed big acts to our Arena, from Elvis Presley to Carrie Underwood,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “Just as entertainment has the evolved, the Arena has evolved and seen many facelifts, but no renovation project has been as extensive and rewarding as the major renovation we’ve recently completed. Thank you Senator Libous, Binghamton Senators, American Food & Vending and all of our community partners for your hard work in helping us greatly enhance our Arena and attract even more acts to Broome County.”
“Whether you are a hockey fan, high school basketball fan, concert-goer, play in a local youth or adult hockey league, everyone in the community will appreciate the enhanced experience provided by the tremendous facelift to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Binghamton Senators are proud to call this building our home.”
American Food & Vending also invested over $100,000 toward renovations to their concession stands.
“We are delighted to make a major investment in the Veteran’s Memorial Arena,” said Clay Hargrove, Regional Vice President for American Food & Vending. “This is because of a shared, long-term commitment to improving and maintaining this wonderful facility for the people of Broome County. It was only possible due to the outstanding leadership and vision of Senator Tom Libous and County Executive Debbie Preston.”
Syracuse lighting experts, Ephesus Lighting, provided the LED lighting system.
“We commend the Broome County Arena for seeing the many clear benefits that our Ephesus LED system offers,” says Joe Casper, President of Ephesus Technologies LLC. Everyone learned the shortcomings of non-LED lighting at the Super Bowl this year. The electrical problem at the Superdome was fixed quickly but it took time for the lights to be turned back on. Had the Superdome been equipped with Ephesus LED lights, the lights would have been back on with the flick of a switch.”
