BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators announced today that on Saturday, March 16 they will recognize the 2013 Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame inductees Bob Carr and Al Hill.
Carr and Hill will be formally inducted into the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame in an ice-level ceremony at 7 p.m., just prior to the B-Sens game versus the Norfolk Admirals.
Carr, a business owner born and raised in Binghamton, became part owner of the Binghamton American Hockey League franchise in 1985 and may be best known for his involvement with the Whalers, Rangers and now Senators.
He spent 40 years as owner of Carr Printing in Endicott, N.Y., before selling the business and retiring in 2008. He now assists with the day to day management of the B-Sens merchandise department.
Carr has played many sports over the years including high school baseball, basketball and local men’s hockey. He has coached and sponsored many youth and adult sports teams and activities in the Southern Tier and largely supported his five children throughout their various sports events.
Carr enjoys spending time with his wife Kathy, their five children and especially his 11 grandchildren who range in ages 3 to 21.
He has always been a firm believer in the saying, “Work hard and have fun”, which is now a favorite to share with his grandchildren.
“Success comes from a strong work ethic. Many of the coaches and players who have come through Binghamton have been successful due to their strong work ethic,” said Carr. “It is a trait I relate to and that has been a pleasure to witness. That is one of my greatest rewards in the 28 years that I have spent in the Binghamton AHL franchise.”
Hill spent much of his pro coaching career in the Southern Tier. He served as an assistant coach with the Binghamton Rangers for three seasons (1990-93). He split assistant coaching duties between Binghamton and the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers during the 1992-93 campaign; a season that saw the Binghamton Rangers post a record of 57-13-10 and set a league record that still stands for most points in a season with 124.
Hill would be appointed head coach of the Binghamton Rangers from 1993-95 posting a record of 76-68-16 as the bench boss.
The Nanaimo, B.C. native returned to Binghamton in 1997 to serve as head coach of the United Hockey League’s B.C. Icemen, coaching them to a Colonial Cup playoff berth in their inaugural season.
Hill began a NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1977. The forward made his NHL debut on Feb. 14, 1977. He would score two goals and three assists to help lead the Flyers past the St. Louis Blues, 6-4. His five points set a new record for most points by a player in his first NHL game.
Hill appeared in 221 career NHL games, all with Philadelphia, scoring 40 goals, 50 assists and 227 penalty minutes. His AHL career spanned 655 games with the Springfield Indians, Maine Mariners, Moncton Alpines and Hershey Bears in which he registered 435 career points.
With the additions of Carr and Hill the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame will have 39 members. Included in its membership are former Broome Dusters and Binghamton Whalers goaltender Ken Holland, Broome Dusters founder and owner Jim Matthews and Binghamton Whalers center and 1982-83 American Hockey League most valuable player Ross Yates.
Tickets for the March 16 game are $19 for side seating and $18 for end seating. Fans can purchase tickets through the B-Sens’ executive office, Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office and all Ticketmaster outlets during normal business hours, by visiting www.ticketmaster.com, or by phone at 607-722-SENS (7367) and through Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000.
