The Ottawa Senators assigned today defenseman Brian Lee and forwards Cody Bass and Zack Smith to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League.
All three players participated in Ottawa’s 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday, Nov. 29. Lee played 17:21 and was a +1, Smith played in 7:01 and Bass played 4:10. The game marked the National Hockey League debut for Smith.
Bass, 21, began the 2008-09 season with the Senators and was a healthy scratch for two games before being assigned to Binghamton on Oct. 7. He was recalled to Ottawa on Nov. 19 and has recorded no points and five penalty minutes in four games. In 16 games with the B-Sens, Bass has scored once and added one assist, while recording 37 penalty minutes. Bass was Ottawa’s first fourth-round pick, 95th overall, in the 2003 NHL entry draft.
Lee, 21, also started the season in Ottawa, playing in the first five games. He was assigned to Binghamton on Oct. 22 before being recalled on Nov. 28. In 16 AHL games, Lee has one goal, five assists, 18 penalty minutes and an even rating. He has recorded two assists and two penalty minutes in six games with the Senators this season. Lee was Ottawa’s first-round pick (ninth overall) in the 2005 NHL entry draft.
Smith, 20, has scored a team-leading nine goals for the B-Sens, while adding seven assists and 32 penalty minutes in 21 games. His 16 points leave him tied for seventh in AHL rookie scoring, while his nine goals are tied for third most among first-year players. He was recalled to Ottawa for the first time on Nov. 28. Smith was Ottawa’s third-round pick (79th overall) in the 2008 NHL entry draft.
