BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators announced today that at their home games Friday, Oct. 28 versus the Albany Devils and Saturday, Oct. 29 versus the Rochester Americans, the B-Sens wives and girlfriends will sell “Love for Lokomotiv” silicone memory bracelets.
On Sept. 7 a plane carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team of the Kontinental Hockey League crashed in Central Russia. 44 lives were lost, affecting many members of the professional hockey community. All proceeds from the bracelet sales will go to the families of the victims.
Rachel Lindstrand, the fiancée of B-Sens goaltender Mike McKenna, initiated the efforts for the weekend.
"Late this summer, we awakened to terrible news that a plane had crashed in Russia carrying the Lokomotiv KHL team. Immediately our thoughts went towards Alex Vasyunov, our friend and Mike's teammate from the past two seasons. As we tried to cope, it became apparent how many members of the hockey world were affected by the tragedy,” explained Lindstrand.
“In a matter of days the international community of hockey wives and girlfriends had come up with a plan to help support the families that lost loved ones. Because Mike and I lost someone close to us, I knew I wanted to help out. When I brought up the Love for Lokomotiv initiative with the other wives and girlfriends in Binghamton, they immediately jumped on board. Any support the Binghamton community can give is greatly appreciated by us, but more importantly, the families of all on board the Lokomotiv plane that day."
The B-Sens customized bracelets can be purchased for $5 at the wives’ table located on the main concourse of the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Additionally, special prayer bracelets comprised of semiprecious jade beads can be purchased through loveforlokomotiv.com, in both adult ($50) and child ($25) sizes.
Tickets for the games are $18.50 for side seating, $17.50 for end seating. Fans can purchase tickets at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or in person at the Binghamton Senators’ executive office or the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office.
