WILKES-BARRE TWP., P.A. – The Binghamton Senators made the short trip down I-81 take on the division rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. A pair of power play markers and a two goal performance from rookie Bobby Butler aided the Senators in sending the Pens packing, with only their second loss of the season, 5-1.
Two first period power play goals allowed the B-Sens to get the jump on the Penguins, swinging the momentum their way early.
At 4:17 of the first, with Wilkes-Barre’s Robert Bortuzzo in the box on a tripping call, Senators defenseman Andre Benoit’s pass from the slot found Corey Locke who blasted a puck past John Curry to put the Binghamton on the board first.
Later in the period Nick Johnson was called for hooking at 16:36 giving the B-Sens another man advantage. On the ensuing power play Butler added to Binghamton’s lead with just 1:47 remaining in the opening stanza as he snipered a shot from the point past Curry. Locke earned his second point of the night with an assist, while Erik Condra would also be credited with an assist on the play, his first of two in the game.
A mere 35 seconds into the second period of play and Roman Wick notched his first goal of the season to give Binghamton a commanding 3-0 lead. Jim O’Brien and Condra would each receive assist credit.
At the 15:00 minute mark Butler hammered home his team leading twelfth goal of the season, to put the Senators on top 4-0.
Into the third period and the Penguins were finally able to get a shot past Barry Brust. With some traffic in front of the Binghamton crease Chris Collins tipped in a blaster from Andrew Hutchinson for his third goal of the season, narrowing the scoring gap to three.
Brust stood his ground for the B-Sens however, ultimately turning away 29 of 30 Wilkes-Barre shots.
Binghamton rallied to regain their four goal lead as Frank Lessard net his first goal of the season, with assists from Cody Bass and Eric Gryba with just 1:46 remaining in regulation.
The B-Sens return to home ice tomorrow night to take on the Toronto Marlies at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating.
