BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – B-Sens’ captain Denis Hamel stepped onto the ice at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena tonight for the 400th time as a member of the Senators and showed just how valuable he’s been to this organization. Hamel recorded two goals, including the game winner in the B-Sens’ 4-3 victory over the Atlantic Division’s Portland Pirates.
The Pirates opened the scoring at 4:03 of the first period, as center Cody McCormick snipered a shot past Mike Brodeur to give Portland the early lead.
Binghamton answered at 8:50 of the first. The puck came loose around the Portland net, through a pile of players crowding net minder Jhonas Enroth. A diving Keegan Dansereau swept the puck into the open stick side of Enroth to knot the score 1-1. Left wing Max Gratchev, signed to a PTO earlier in the day recorded an assist on the goal.
Just shy of a minute into the second period, Derek Smith fed the puck to captain Hamel breaking into the slot. Hamel faked Enroth out of position near the Portland net, and Pirates forward Mark Mancari came up short trying to catch the Binghamton captain who was able to fire the puck into the wide open net to put Binghamton up 2-1.
Mancari would make up for failing to foil the B-Sens previous scoring attempt as he net his 15th goal of the season to tie the score at two at 7:50 of the period in the waning seconds of a two-man advantage, with Tim Spencer and Smith serving two minutes each for elbowing and high-sticking respectively.
The B-Sens regained the lead by the end of the period as Brandon Svendsen wristed his third goal of the season in at the 11:50 mark.
58 seconds into the third, with Portland carrying over a penalty from the second period for too many men on the ice, Hamel scored what would eventually become the game winner as his shot tipped to the front of the net trickled through traffic and into the Pirates’ goal. Smith assisted on the goal earning his second point of the game.
In the final two minutes of play, the Pirates closed in on the B-Sens as Mike Weber nets his first goal of the season, but ultimately fell short.
