The Binghamton Senators staged a late rally to send the game into overtime and then finally a shootout where they were able to defeat the Rochester Americans 3-2 Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Americans cracked the scoreboard first when Karl Stewart beat netminder Jeff Glass with a feed from Michal Repik.  Streaking into the Senators zone on a 2-on-1 break, Repik feathered a pass to Stewart who shoveled home the game’s first goal past the blocker of Glass.

Late in the frame Matt Taormina answered back with a man-advantage marker to pull Binghamton even. From the far point, Ilya Zubov threw a pass down low into the corner to Denis Hamel who found a wide open Taormina across the crease for an easy tip in goal.

After a scoreless middle stanza, Rochester picked up an early goal in the third to regain the lead off of a Kenndal McArdle goal. The play started when Matt Duffy fired a shot from the point on net where Glass made the initial stop. The puck kicked loose and McArdle gained possession and snapped home the go ahead goal.

With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, the B-Sens struck for the equalizer while up two men. After a save by David Shantz, Hamel collected a loose puck off the far boards and ripped a slapshot past the goaltender to send the game into overtime and then eventually the shootout. Zubov and Mattias Karlsson picked up the helpers on Hamel’s team-leading 25th tally.

The Senators completed the comeback when Greg Mauldin, Hamel, and Zubov all scored in the shootout, while Glass turned away all three Rochester attempts. Glass finished with 35 saves to earn his 15th victory of the season. With his goal and assist, Hamel earned second star honors, while Rochester’s Shantz picked up the number one star with 50 saves.

The Senators put a season high 52 shots on net, including 23 shots in the third period, also a season high for one period. With the victory, the B-Sens retain a six-point advantage over the Philadelphia Phantoms for the final playoff spot in the East Division.

The B-Sens (39-27-5-3, 86 pts.) return to home ice on Wednesday night to close out their four-game homestand with a visit from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (45-24-2-2, 94 pts.) at 7:05 p.m. Good seats remain for this contest.
