REGIN’S HAT TRICK POWERS B-SENS PAST BEARS

Center Peter Regin netted the first hat trick of the season for Binghamton and scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime to power the B-Sens to a 5-4 win over the Hershey Bears on Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The win was Binghamton’s fourth straight against the Bears.

The contest started off similarly to Wednesday night’s tilt as the Bears struck quickly to take the lead. Alexandre Giroux and Kyle Wilson posted two quick goals midway through the frame to stake the Bears to a 2-0 lead.

The B-Sens didn’t take long to respond when they were handed their first man-advantage of the evening. Josh Hennessy fired a wrister past Hershey goaltender Kris Mayotte to put the Sens on the board and cut the lead in half.  Hennessy took a feed from Ilya Zubov along the far boards and walked in to the right faceoff circle where he snapped a shot over Mayotte’s glove.

Just over one minute later the B-Sens knotted the score when Denis Hamel added another power-play marker.  After a shot from in close, Hamel picked up the loose change and stuffed home his team-leading 21st goal of the season.  With the marker, Hamel extended his point streak to eight games (7+5).

Before the first period came to a close Hershey pulled ahead again when Wilson picked up his second tally of the night with an easy tip in goal.

Early in the second the Sens battled back to tie the score at three when Peter Regin scored his first goal of the night on the power play.  Hamel took the puck over the Hershey blue line and found Regin with a backhand pass.  Regin then skated through the zone and ripped a wrist shot over Mayotte’s blocker to chase him from the game in favor of Daren Machesney.

The Bears answered right back two minutes later with a power-play goal of their own from Graham Mink. Mink, who picked up four points Wednesday night, put away a rebound to give the Bears a 4-3 lead.

Regin struck for his second goal at 11:29 of the middle period.  After taking a pass from Hamel at the top of the crease, Regin skated to his left and scooped a shot top shelf over Machesney to tie the game at 4 apiece.

After a scoreless third period, the game went to sudden death.  Derek Smith took a feed from Mauldin and threaded a pass through the defenders legs to a wide-open Regin.  Regin was all alone in front of the net as he beat the Hershey netminder with a backhand shot to seal the victory for Binghamton. The hat trick was the first since Denis Hamel netted three goals in a 4-2 over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on October 27, 2007.

With his big night, Regin extended his point streak to seven games (4+9).  Mauldin finished the night with three assists, which tied his career-high and gave the winger multiple points in three straight games.
The B-Sens penalty kill answered the call on Friday, stopping eight of nine Hershey power plays. Netminder Jeff Glass made 24 saves to earn the win for Binghamton.

The B-Sens (31-20-5-3, 70 pts.) return to home ice to host the Rochester Americans (23-32-0-5, 51 pts.) on Saturday night with a 7:05 p.m. faceoff. Good seats remain for this contest. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, by calling ticket master at 722-7272, or at the Arena box office inside the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
