Fresh off their two-game road trip in Texas, the Binghamton Senators won their second game in three nights beating the Springfield Falcons 4-2 in front of a sell-out crowd of 4,710 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Saturday night.
Drew Fata did not show any signs of jetlag, notching Binghamton’s first goal at 5:11 of the first period. With the puck trapped in Springfield’s right corner, an attempt was made to clear the zone when the B-Sen defenseman intercepted the puck, squared up quickly near the blue line and hit the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season and first marker in 14 games.
Three-and-a-half minutes later, Binghamton grabbed a 2-0 lead when Elmira Jackal left wing call-up, Derek Couture took a pass from fellow left wing Ilya Zubov, skated past a Falcon defender near the left circle, and slipped the puck behind Springfield goaltender Devan Dubnyk. The goal marked Couture’s first American Hockey League goal of the season and Zubov’s 22nd assist of the season.
At 11:44, Springfield defenseman Theo Peckham put the Falcon’s on the board, wristing a shot just above the right wing circle that needled its way through traffic and into the net behind Binghamton goaltender Jeff Glass.
After a scoreless second, Binghamton regained a two-goal lead when Couture rebounded defenseman Tomas Kudelka’s left-circle shot past Dubnyk point blank from the top of the crease. The lead, though, was cut to one just over four minutes later when Falcon left wing Bryan Lerg slapped a shot from a faceoff in the left circle at 6:09.
With less than one minute of play, B-Sen left wing Greg Mauldin sealed the team’s victory with an empty net goal with a help from defenseman Matt Carkner, who slid to block a Falcon shot in the B-Sens’ zone. The puck ricocheted into the neutral zone, where Mauldin picked it up breaking away from two Falcons to skate in the goal, his ninth of the season. With the marker Mauldin extended his point streak to three games (2+1).
Couture’s two-goal game was the first of his AHL career. Glass stopped 26 shots and Binghamton’s penalty kill was a perfect 5-for-5.
The B-Sens return to home ice on Wednesday, Feb. 4 to host the San Antonio Rampage at 7:05 p.m.  Good seats remain for this contest. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, by calling ticket master at 722-7272, or at the Arena box office inside the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
