WILKES-BARRE TWP., P.A. – The Binghamton Senators earned their first win of the 2011-12 season as they defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-4 in overtime Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Forward Mark Parrish had a four point night, tallying a pair each of goals and assists, including the game winner.
Brandon DeFazio struck first, cleanly beating B-Sens goaltender Robin Lehner to give the Pens a 1-0 advantage at 5:49 of the first. Eric Tangradi increased that lead to 2-0, chopping away at the puck to poke it in glove side with 1:17 remaining in the opening period.
Just 16 seconds into the second period rookie Derek Grant put Binghamton on the board. Grant picked up the puck at the blue line following the opening face-off, skating in alone on Pens netminder Brad Thiessen to bury the puck and pull the B-Sens within one, 2-1.
Moments later, B-Sens blue liner Shaun Heshka was sent to the box to serve an interference penalty. Geoff Walker converted on the ensuing power play, beating Lehner stick side to put Wilkes-Barre back ahead by two.
Mike Hoffman answered 29 seconds later, notching his first of two points in the game, to bring Binghamton back within a goal, 3-2.
The B-Sens jumped to a 4-3 advantage scoring on their first two shots of the third period. Parrish tied the game up at 7:16, before Kaspars Daugavins gave Binghamton the lead at the 11:18 mark, outworking the Pens defense to wrist the puck top shelf.
Brian Lerg would tie the score once more, just 1:30 after the Daugavins goal, beating Lehner five-hole to knot the game at four.
Parrish put the game away for the B-Sens at 3:29 of the overtime period. Jim O’Brien (0+2=2) and Hoffman each assisted on Parrish’s game winner in overtime, earning their second points of the night. Corey Locke also ended the night with a pair of assists.
The B-Sens travel to Albany tomorrow to take on the Devils in a rare 4 p.m. tilt. Fans can listen live on “Binghamton’s Classic Hits” BIG 107.5 (WBBI-FM) beginning 30 minutes before game time for Countdown to Faceoff with Grady Whittenburg, the voice of the B-Sens.
