BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The defending Calder Cup champion Binghamton Senators fell to the Hershey Bears 3-2 in Friday’s season opener at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Patrick Wiercioch and Mark Parrish each tallied goals in the loss.
The Bears nabbed the lead in the game with a pair of shorthanded goals. Christian Hanson stripped the B-Sens of the puck, breaking in on Robin Lehner at 7:20 of the first period, while Chris Bourque beat Lehner at 8:18 of the second period.
Binghamton narrowed the deficit to 2-1 at 11:14 of the middle frame. Mike Hoffman fed Patrick Wiercioch, whose slap shot from the left circle beat Braden Holtby for the B-Sens’ first goal of the 2011-12 season.
With 6:14 remaining on the clock in the second, the Bears regained their two-goal lead as Patrick Wellar backhanded the puck through traffic to make it 3-1.
With 3:58 remaining Mark Parrish pulled the B-Sens back within one, scoring to make it 3-2. Wiercioch earned the secondary assist on the goal for his second point in the game.
Lehner stopped 34 of 37 shots faced, falling to 0-1-0. His counterpart Holtby turned away 27 of 29 to improve to 1-0-0. Binghamton ended the night 1 for 6 on the power play, while Hershey went 0 for 3.
The B-Sens try to rebound tomorrow night as they host the Toronto Marlies in a 7:05 p.m. tilt. All fans in attendance receive a free 2011-12 B-Sens magnet schedule courtesy of Wendy’s.
