New contract with Ottawa includes heightended pressure on Gryba

On July 18, the Ottawa Senators announced the signing of defenseman Eric Gryba to a two-year, two-way contract, a move that assistant general manager Tim Murray believes could bring Gryba closer to the National Hockey League.

“I believe he can come to training camp and compete for a job at the national league level,” said Murray. “If he doesn’t make it right out of camp, we expect him to go to Binghamton and be a leader, play hard, and at least be a depth guy until he achieves his goal of becoming a national league player.”

Murray also noted that if Gryba is to succeed in the pros, he needs to focus on his style of play. “We hope he translates into being a big, shut down defenseman who’s hard to play against,” Murray explained. “That’s the style we want him to play, and that’s the style he showed us in the second half of last year that he can play.”

Last season in Binghamton, Gryba totaled 20 points in 73 games, including 5 goals and 15 assists. “He made big strides last year… on some nights, he was our best defenseman in Binghamton.” Murray said. “Huge improvement over his rookie season, so we just expect him to get better and better.”
