B-Sens Weekly

Friday, Feb. 6: Hershey 3, Binghamton 2
Shots: Hershey 25, Binghamton 31
PP: Hershey 0 for 3, Binghamton 0 for 1
The Binghamton Senators fell 3-2 to the visiting Hershey Bears pushing their losing streak to five straight games.  Chris Conner notched a pair of goals to lead the Bears while Pheonix Copley stopped 29 of 31 shots faced to earn the victory.
Binghamton opened the scoring just shy of the seven minute mark of the first period when Garrett Thompson took a feed from Buddy Robinson and buried it under Copley’s blocker for his third goal of the season.  Hershey tied the game less than two minutes later when Casey Wellman’s one-timer from Jim O’Brien trickled behind Binghamton’s Scott Greenham.  The Bears took a 2-1 lead with less than four minutes to play in the opening frame when Conner scored his first of the evening off a great backhanded feed from Chandler Stephenson.
The teams traded power-play chances in the middle frame, but neither found the back of the net keeping Binghamton’s deficit at 2-1 heading into the final frame.
Conner increased Hershey’s lead to 3-1 just 2:33 into the third period when he received a feed from Stanislav Galiev from behind Binghamton’s net and sent it home for his 12th goal of the year.  Colin Greening cut the Bears’ lead to 3-2 just shy of the midway point after he tucked a centering feed from Cole Schneider underneath Copley’s pads for his first American Hockey League goal of the year.  Despite holding Hershey to just 13 shots combined over the final 40 minutes of play, the Bears held on for the one-goal victory.
Greenham finished with 22 saves for Binghamton in the losing effort.
Saturday, Feb. 7: Lehigh Valley 1, Binghamton 4
Shots: Lehigh Valley 30, Binghamton 32
PP: Lehigh Valley 0 for 5, Binghamton 0 for 3
The Binghamton Senators snapped a five-game losing streak in front of a record-setting crowd at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena after they dropped the visiting Lehigh Valley Phantoms 4-1.  Peter Mannino made 29 saves in net for the B-Sens earning his second victory of the season.
Jason Akeson gave the Phantoms the early lead when he notched his 11th goal of the year 5:08 into the opening period.  Binghamton responded less than 45 seconds later when Shane Prince beat Lehigh Valley’s starting goaltender Rob Zepp for his 16th of the season.  The teams went to the first intermission tied 1-1.
Following a back-and-forth second period, Prince intercepted a pass in the neutral zone with less than two minutes to play and carried the puck past several Phantoms’ skaters before finding Schneider who beat Zepp for his 14th tally of the season giving Binghamton the 2-1 advantage heading into the third.
Mannino and the B-Sens defense saved the best hockey for the final frame stifling all seven of the Phantoms scoring chances while adding two empty net tallies; the first coming from Carter Camper followed by a shorthanded empty-netter from Robinson.
Anthony Stolarz came in for relief of an injured Zepp early in the third period stopping all five shots faced for the Phantoms.
Sunday, Feb. 8: Binghamton 4, Utica 7
Shots: Binghamton 29, Utica 45
PP: Binghamton 1 for 5, Utica 1 for 5
The Binghamton Senators started off with a bang but failed to hang on falling 7-4 to their host Utica Comets.  Bobby Sanguinetti and Will Acton each scored twice as the Comets exploded for four third period goals breaking a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes of play.
Binghamton opened the scoring just 1:18 into the first when Prince grabbed his 17th of the season off assists from Chris Wideman and Nick Tuzzolino.  Ryan Dzingel was awarded a penalty shot at the 2:30 mark of the first and converted with a wrist shot underneath Utica’s Joacim Eriksson’s glove side for his 10th goal of the season giving Binghamton the 2-0 lead.  Alexandre Grenier cut the B-Sens lead to 2-1 on the power play with just over five minutes in the opening period sending Binghamton to the locker room with the one-goal lead.
Acton evened the score at two goals aside when he notched a shorthanded marker 7:21 into the second period.  Derek Grant regained the lead for the B-Sens with a 5-on-3 power-play strike 12:17 into the second off assists from Prince and Camper.  Utica managed to once again even the score when Sanguinetti notched his first of the night with just over two minutes to play in the middle frame.
Andrey Pedan gave Utica the 4-3 lead 4:08 into the final period with a slap shot directly off a faceoff win.  Dzingel scored his second of the evening just over three minutes later to even the score before the Comets scored three goals in just 1:52 on three consecutive shots to move the final score to 7-4 Utica.
Mannino managed 38 saves on 45 shots faced while Eriksson surrendered four goals on 28 shots faced to earn the victory.  Six Comets skaters scored multiple points for Utica while the teams combined for 138 penalty minutes including six fights.
