B-Sens Weekly

Wednesday, Jan. 7: Binghamton 0, Portland 3
Shots: Binghamton 35, Portland 38
PP: Binghamton 0 for 6, Portland 0 for 5
The Binghamton Senators fell 3-0 to the host Portland Pirates in the first of a three game road trip.  Darian Dziurzynski, younger brother of Binghamton’s David, notched two goals while Mike McKenna turned aside all 35 of Binghamton’s shots to lead Portland to their fifth straight win.
Dziurzynski opened the scoring for the Pirates 14:19 into the first period with a wrap-around attempt that beat the B-Sens Peter Mannino for his sixth goal of the season.  Portland carried the one-goal advantage into the first intermission outshooting Binghamton 15-8.
The second frame appeared to be headed for a stalemate until Dylan Reese made it 2-0 with just four seconds remaining in the period.  With the faceoff to Mannino’s left, the puck flipped into the air and settled in front of Reese just inside the blue line.  Reese, who was the lone skater on the ice with an idea of where the puck landed, quickly wristed the puck towards Mannino and found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
Portland’s Dziurzynski made it 3-0 with his second of the evening just 2:51 into the final period.  McKenna stopped all 18 of Binghamton’s scoring chances in the closing 20 minutes of play to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
Mannino finished with 35 saves on 38 shots faced in his second appearance in net for Binghamton.
Friday, Jan. 9: Binghamton 3, Worcester 6
Shots: Binghamton 29, Worcester 36
PP: Binghamton 1 for 3, Worcester 3 for 6
The Binghamton Senators losing streak grew to four straight with a 6-3 loss to the Worcester Sharks Friday night at the DCU Center.  Troy Grosenick stopped 24 of 27 shots faced while Willie Coetzee notched a goal and three assists to lead the Sharks to victory.
Coetzee opened the scoring 2:20 into the opening period on the first of three power-play goals from Worcester to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.  Just over six minutes later Chris Tierney tallied his fourth goal of the season when he beat a sprawling Andrew Hammond to make it 2-0.  Binghamton managed to cut the deficit to 2-1 just 25 seconds later when David Dziurzynski alertly put home a puck that ricocheted off the end boards and onto his stick.  However, the Sharks managed to restore its two-goal cushion at 11:15 when Daniil Tarasov beat Hammond for his seventh of the year, giving Worcester the 3-1 lead going into the first intermission break.
Darren Kramer cut the hosts lead to one after he pushed home his first goal of the year under the pads of Worcester’s Grosenick just over three minutes into the second.  Ryan Carpenter put the hosts back on top 10:45 into the period when he took a feed from Travis Oleksuk to make it 4-2.  Despite being outshot 15-5 in the frame, the B-Sens refused to quit.  With Binghamton working the power play with less than two minutes to play in the second, Matt Puempel redirected a shot from Shane Prince past Grosenick to cut the Sharks lead to 4-3 heading into the final intermission.
Worcester outshot the B-Sens 9-7 over the final 20 minutes of play while adding two more goals to move the final score to 6-3 and push Binghamton’s record under .500 on the year.
Saturday, Jan. 10: Binghamton 1, Manchester 6
Shots: Binghamton 26, Manchester 42
PP: Binghamton 1 for 4, Manchester 5 for 11
The Binghamton Senators fell 6-1 on the road to the Manchester Monarchs Saturday night extending its losing streak to a season-high five straight.  The B-Sens racked up 66 penalty minutes while allowing five power-play goals on 11 opportunities.
Michael Mersch gave the hosts the 1-0 lead on their first power-play chance just 1:52 into the opening frame.  Manchester outshot the B-Sens 16-11 over the opening 20 minutes to take a one-goal lead into the first intermission.
Mersch recorded his second of the night 12:34 into the second on the game’s lone even-strength tally to make it 2-0 Manchester.  Ryan Dzingel made it a 2-1 contest just over two minutes later when he beat Patrik Bartosak on the power play for his ninth tally of the year.  Andrew Bodnarchuk restored the host’s two-goal cushion with a five-on-three power-play goal at 18:44 of the period to give Manchester the 3-1 lead heading into the final break.
With Binghamton’s frustrations clearly showing towards the end of the second period, Chris Wideman was dealt a five-minute major for cross checking and a 10-minute misconduct.  The Monarchs took full advantage of the major power-play time chipping in three man-advantage goals within the first 4:11 of the third to put the game out of reach at 6-1.
Hammond came into the game with 14:47 remaining for Binghamton in relief of starting goaltender Mannino who allowed all six Manchester goals on 33 shots faced.  Hammond turned aside all nine shots faced to freeze the final at 6-1 in favor of the Monarchs.
Jordan Weal finished with four assists for Manchester while Bartosak turned aside 25 of 26 shots faced for his sixth victory of the season.
