BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Despite holding a 4-1 lead five minutes into the second period, the Binghamton Senators fell 6-5 to the visiting Springfield Falcons in their first loss on a Friday night this season. Andrew Hammond allowed four goals on 14 shots faced before Scott Greenham came in allowing two goals on 16 shots faced in 20 minutes of play.
Danny New gave the B-Sens the 1-0 lead just past the seven minute mark of the opening period with an unassisted goal from just inside the blue line. Alex Grant notched his third marker of the season on a power-play blast 11:54 into the period to give Binghamton the 2-0 lead. The Falcons’ Luke Adam beat Hammond on a late period breakaway to make the score 2-1 heading into the first intermission break.
The B-Sens made it a 3-1 lead just 2:50 into the second when Patrick Mullen pushed home a loose puck on a Binghamton power play for his fourth goal of the year. Less than three minutes later, Carter Camper sent home a feed from Shane Prince to make it 4-1 Binghamton. After Scott Munroe took over in net for Anton Forsberg, Springfield responded with three unanswered goals to end the period, as well as Hammond’s night, sending the teams to the locker room tied 4-4.
The B-Sens regained their one-goal advantage just 31 seconds into the third when Ryan Dzingel ripped a shot on a 2-on-1 breakaway over Munroe’s glove making it 5-4. Springfield once again tied things up when Trent Vogelhuber took a pass from Mike Hoeffel in front of Greenham and sent home his fifth of the season at 2:29. The Falcons controlled the puck for the majority of the final 20 minutes of play outshooting the B-Sens 14-5. Following a delay of game call on Binghamton, Springfield converted on its lone power-play chance of the evening when Kerby Rychel beat Greenham with just over eight minutes to play in regulation. Munroe stonewalled Binghamton’s remaining scoring chances to seal the come-from-behind 6-5 win.
Rychel finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Falcons offense while Danny New notched a goal and assist to pace the B-Sens.
