SIX GOAL THIRD PERIOD PROPELS SENS PAST BLACKHAWKS

LONDON, ONTARIO– The Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks hit the ice for a 2 p.m. tilt on day two of the 2010 NHL Rookie Tournament at the John Labatt Centre.  Both teams suffered opening day loses: Ottawa fell 5-3 Saturday afternoon to the Pittsburgh Penguins, while the Toronto Maple Leafs doubled up on Chicago 6-3.

Chicago’s David Gilbert opened the scoring as he fired a puck past Ottawa’s Brandon Foote to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 12:28 of the first period. Exactly one minute later, the Senators answered back as Jim O’Brien snipered a puck past the ‘Hawks Kent Simpson. Bobby Butler notched an assist on O’Brien’s mark.

The teams were held to scoreless battle for much of the second period. With just over a minute remaining in the second, Steele Boomer floated a pass to Rob Flick, who was able to bury it in the Ottawa net to lift the Blackhawks to a 2-1 lead.

Just 59 seconds into the third period the Blackhawks jumped ahead 3-1 as Igor Marakov managed to push his own rebound past Foote to give Chicago a two-goal lead.

Ottawa’s Adam Wallace narrowed the deficit with a goal at the 3:44 mark. B-Sens tough guy Tim Spencer would be credited with an assist on the goal.

Then in dramatic fashion the Senators offense exploded.

At 13:10 a streaking Eric Gryba sent a shot sailing into the Chicago net to tie the score at three apiece. Mike Hoffman, David Dziurzynski, Patrick Wiercioch and Kaspars Daugavins followed suite as the Sens rookies bounced back, cruising to the 7-3 final.

The Senators practice at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13. The tournament concludes Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. as Ottawa is set to face Jerry D’Amigo and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
