LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators (41-30-5-4, 91 pts.) finished the 2008-09 season this past week, taking two points in their final three games to finish the season in fifth place of the East Division with 91 points. The B-Sens were barely edged by Philadelphia for the final playoff position. The 91 points by Binghamton are the most ever by a team that missed the playoffs.
WEDNESDAY, APR. 8 @ SYRACUSE (4-3 W-OT): The B-Sens shocked the Crunch with a late comeback with rookie Zack Smith scoring with 3.9 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 3 and force overtime. Peter Regin completed the comeback with the game-winning goal just 32 seconds into overtime. Greg Mauldin and Mark Bomersback each chipped in a goal for Binghamton, giving both players goals in three straight games. Netminder Jeff Glass stopped 26 shots to earn his 17th victory of the season. Defenseman Derek Smith extended his point streak (1+3) to four games with an assist.
FRIDAY, APR. 10 vs. NORFOLK (6-1 L): The Admirals ended Binghamton’s playoff hopes on Friday night at the Arena. Brandon Segal netted a natural hat trick to power the Admirals to victory. Segal’s hat trick included one power-play goal, one even strength and one short-handed tally. Justin Keller added two goals for Norfolk. The Admirals outshot the B-Sens 44-30. Derek Smith scored Binghamton’s lone goal, a short-handed goal midway through the second period to give the defenseman points in five straight games (2+3). Center Josh Hennessy returned for Binghamton after missing 18 games to injury and collected an assist on Smith’s goal.
SATURDAY, APR. 11 @ ALBANY (3-2 L): Binghamton faced Albany in its final game of the season and fell by a 3-2 final in a physical battle. Greg Mauldin capped the season with a two-point night (1+1). Peter Regin buried his 18th goal of the season. Netminder Mitch O’Keefe turned away 34 of 37 shots in the losing effort for Binghamton. The B-Sens racked up a season-high 97 penalty minutes.
SENS SNIPPETS:
- The B-Sens finished the season with the top power play, converting 22.7% of their chances.
- Binghamton’s balanced offensive attack finished the season with four players with 50 or more points and an additional two players with more than 45 points.
- Denis Hamel finished the season with a team-leading 25 goals, marking the fifth time he has led the B-Sens in goal scoring.
- Left-winger Greg Mauldin posted career highs in goals (24), assists (27) and points (51). He was also the only Binghamton player to skate in all 80 contests.
- Defenseman Mattias Karlsson, who was selected to play in the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic and was named to the 2008-09 AHL All-Rookie Team, finished the season one point shy of the B-Sens franchise record for points by a defenseman (Filip Novak - 52 points). Karlsson notched nine goals and 42 assists for 51 points.
- Blueliner Derek Smith nearly doubled his point output from 07-08, collecting 24 points (7+17) in 75 games this season.

Seasonal operations of the Binghamton Senators’ merchandise store at the Center Ice Team Shop inside the Oakdale Mall will end on Sunday, Apr. 19. Fans can continue to purchase merchandise throughout the summer online at www.binghamtonsenators.com. A new, expanded online store will be launched in the coming months as well. Merchandise operations at the Oakdale Mall will resume in late August.
