B-SENS LOSE TO BEARS 7-1

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators were defeated by the visiting Hershey Bears 7-1 on Saturday night in front of over 4,100 fans at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Hershey Bears dominated the first period scoring four goals and leading the shots 12-3. Kelly Zajac opened the scoring 5:25 into the first period with his fourth goal of the season. Ryan Bourque passed the puck from the goal line to Zajac waiting in the slot who then got the puck past B-Sens starting goaltender Chris Driedger. Christian Djoos also assisted on the first goal of the night.

Liam O’Brien made it a 2-0 game 15:44 into the game after he received a pass from the right side of the ice and tallied his ninth of the year with a turn around shot. Djoos and Nathan Walker were awarded the assists on O’Brien’s goal.

Ryan Bourque scored his third goal of the season a minute later after he found the puck bouncing off a B-Sens skate. Christian Thomas and Zajac picked up the assists on the third goal of the night.

With less than two minutes to play in the game, Hubert Labrie completed a backhanded shot from the right side of Driedger to bring to a 4-0 game. Stanislav Galiev and Travis Boyd assisted on Labrie’s second goal of the year.

Matt O’Connor led the team onto the ice for the second period coming in for relief. Casey Bailey put the B-Sens on the board 5:19 during a Binghamton power play. Jason Akeson faked a shot from the right hand side of the ice and sent a pass to Bailey waiting in the left faceoff circle. Bailey released one of his slap shots to score his 19th goal of the year with Francis Perron getting the secondary assist. Binghamton entered the final intermission trailing 4-1 while being outshot 23-19.

Hershey pushed the lead to 5-1 when Paul Carey scored on a power-play chance 45 seconds into the final period. Carey picked up a rebounded puck and lifted it over O’Connor’s left leg. Riley Barber and Djoos helped assist on Carey’s 18th goal of the season.

It became a 6-1 game in favor of Hershey after Thomas scored a penalty shot putting the puck through O’Connor’s five hole at the 1:42 mark.

Chris Bourque scored Hershey’s seventh goal of the night with help from Aaron Ness after he shot the puck from below the goal line over O’Connor’s left shoulder.

Driedger picked up the loss stopping eight shots while O’Connor had 23 saves. Vitek Vanecek had 27 saves to earn the win.
