BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators gave up a third-period lead in an eventual loss to the visiting Toronto Marlies, 6-3, in front of over 3,500 fans at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday night.
The Marlies opened the scoring 3:44 into the first during a power-play opportunity. Andreas Johnsson scored his 15th goal of the season after a pass across the ice got deflected to the slot and found Johnsson waiting. Kerby Rychel and Seth Griffith picked up the assists on the lone goal of the frame. Binghamton went to the first intermission trailing 1-0 and being outshot 12-6.
Michael Blunden scored his sixth goal in five games 3:35 into the middle frame to tie the game up. Patrick Sieloff passed the puck to Francis Perron at the top of the right faceoff circle during a four-minute power play. Perron sent a cross ice pass to Blunden who was wide open at the left faceoff circle and sniped the puck past Antoine Bibeau.
The B-Sens took the 2-1 lead with less than eight minutes to play one another power-play chance. Ben Harpur sent a shot to the net that rebounded off Bibeau’s leg pad and found Jack Rodewald coming up from behind the net. Rodewald took control of the shot and sent his 16th goal of the year to the back of the net with Phil Varone also earning an assist.
Toronto responded with a goal just over a minute later to tie the game at two a piece. Griffith carried the puck to the left faceoff circle before passing the puck to Rychel waiting in the slot who then sent a slap shot past Chris Driedger. Travis Dermott picked up the secondary assist on Rychel’s 12th goal of the year.
Nick Paul scored his ninth goal of the season with 38 seconds left to play in the middle frame to give the B-Sens a 3-2 lead. Paul and Jason Akeson skated into the Marlies zone side by side with Paul holding the puck. Paul gave a drop pass to Akeson on his left side who then sent the puck back to Paul in between the legs of a defender. Paul beat Bibeau and helped bring Binghamton to the final intermission leading the game despite being outshot 25 to 21.
Just over five minutes in to the last period, Andrew Nielsen brought it back to a tie game. Trevor Moore sent a drop pass to Nielsen coming into the zone who then beat Driedger on his glove hand side. Brooks Laich had his first point of the night on Nielsen’s 11th goal of the year.
Andrew Campbell scored the game-winning goal at the 11:57 mark with his second goal of the season and first of the night. Campbell released a shot from the blue line that found the top shelf of the goal with Griffith and Laich earning the assists.
Toronto pushed the game out of reach, 6-3, with two empty-net goals a minute apart from Campbell and Johnsson.
Bibeau earned the win with 27 saves while Driedger had 36 stops in the losing effort.
