SYRACUSE, NY. – Phil Varone scored two shorthanded goals and finished with a four-point night to help lead the Binghamton Senators to a 4-2 victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Friday night at the War Memorial Arena.
Binghamton got on the board first just less than three minutes into the game after Alex Krushelnyski scored his third goal of the season. Varone sent the puck to Krushelnyski who was in a one-on-one race up the ice with a Crunch defender. Krushelnyski took a high stick to the face during the rush, but did not let that stop him from sliding the puck by Kristers Gudlevskis to put the B-Sens up 1-0. Gabriel Gagne earned his first professional point picking up an assist on the opening goal.
The Crunch tied up the game at one a piece just past the midway point of the opening frame. Jeremy Morin held the puck in Binghamton’s zone following a Syracuse faceoff win and sent a one timer from the center slot past Matt O’Connor. Tanner Richard and Daniel Walcott assisted on Morin’s eighth goal of the year. The teams went into the first intermission tied 1-1 with the B-Sens being outshot 17-9.
Varone scored the lone goal of the middle frame and gave Binghamton the 2-1 lead over Syracuse. While the B-Sens were on the penalty kill, Ben Harpur sent the puck from his own team’s zone bouncing through the neutral zone. Varone met the puck at the top of the faceoff circle and continued his rush to the net where he beat Gudlevskis for his 11th goal of the year. The B-Sens went to the final intermission with a one-goal lead despite being outshot 24-16 by the Crunch.
Varone scored his second goal of the night at the 10:31 mark of the third on another shorthanded rush bringing the score to 3-1. The forward sent the puck top shelf past Gudlevskis to score his 12th goal of the season and tie Jack Rodewald for the team lead in goals.
Syracuse brought it back to a one-goal game with less than two minutes to play. With Gudlevskis to the bench in favor of an extra skater, Yanni Gourde deflected a shot in for his 14th of the season with assists going to Cory Coacher and Morin.
Max McCormick secured the win for the visiting team after scoring an empty net goal for his 11th of the year and to put the final score to 4-2. Varone picked up the assist to cap off his four-point performance.
O’Connor earned the win stopping 34 shots while Gudlevskis had 20 saves in the losing effort.
