HERSHEY, PA – Jack Rodewald and Jason Akeson each recorded three points as the Binghamton Senators defeated the Hershey Bears 4-2 on the road at Giant Center on Sunday night.
Binghamton cashed in on a four-minute power play early in the game to take a 1-0 lead on the road. Ben Harpur took a quick shot from the left point that was deflected by Rodewald hanging out at the top of the crease for his 12th of the season. Assists came from Harpur and Akeson 3:36 into the game.
An odd-man rush pushed the B-Sens out to a two-goal advantage just over two minutes later as Akeson and Phil Varone moved in on a two-on-one rush. Akeson faked a shot from the right circle and dished the puck to Varone who deked and slid the puck under the pad of Vitek Vanecek on the backhand. The goal was Varone’s ninth of the year from Akeson an Rodewald. Binghamton led 2-0 after the first period and outshot the Bears 13-3.
In the second period, Hershey took advantage of a power play to pull within one. Christian Thomas sent a cross-ice pass to Jakub Vrana who fired a one timer by the glove of Matt O’Connor to decrease Binghamton’s lead to 2-1 with 4:13 left in the period. Assists on Vrana’s goal were credited to Thomas and Aaron Ness. After two periods, the B-Sens held a 2-1 lead and outshot the Bears 14-12.
Chris Bourque scored on the power play early in the third to tie the game 2-2. Bourque moved down the left side and lifted the puck over the right shoulder of O’Connor to even the score 3:32 into the period for his ninth of the year with the lone helper from Christian Djoos.
Later in the third, Chad Nehring poked the puck free and scored his first of the year to put Binghamton ahead 3-2. After the interception, Max McCormick started a two-on-none rush and slid the puck to Nehring who sent the puck over the glove of Vanecek at 8:27 of the final frame with the only assist going to McCormick.
Varone scored his second of the night to give Binghamton a 4-2 lead late in the game. Akeson moved down to the bottom of the left circle and fed Varone in the slot who ripped a slap shot over the shoulder of Vaneck with 3:13 remaining. Akeson and Rodewald had the assists and the Senators defeated the Bears 4-2.
O’Connor stopped 24 of 26 in the win while Vanecek denied 17 of 21 in the loss.
