B-SENS DOWN U. OF OTTAWA IN PRESEASON ACTION, 3-2

OTTAWA, Ont. – Kyle Flanagan set up two goals while Francis Perron, Ryan Rupert, and Chris Rumble all scored as the Binghamton Senators opened up their preseason with a 3-2 on the road over the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night.

Binghamton created several chances in the first period but were denied by Gee-Gees goaltender Anthony Brodeur. The biggest chance came courtesy of Chris Carlisle. From the right wing circle, Carlisle ripped a shot that was gloved out of the air by Brodeur to keep the game scoreless.

The Senators took the lead late in the first on hard work by Kyle Flanagan behind the net. With his teammate below the goal line, Francis Perron set up in front of the crease and snapped in the pass from Flanagan for the 1-0 lead with three minutes left in the first period.

University of Ottawa pulled even with just 35 seconds left in the opening frame. Kevin Dominigue was hauled down on a breakaway but managed to slip the puck by Senators goaltender Matt O’Connor to knot the score up at one goal apiece after twenty minutes of action.

Binghamton took the lead for the second time of the night less than six minutes into the second period on a loose puck in front of University of Ottawa’s net. With traffic in front of Gee-Gees goaltender Anthony Brodeur, Ryan Rupert crashed to the crease and slid the puck in for the 2-1 lead 5:23 into the second. Graham Hunt came in and replaced Anthony Brodeur in net midway through the second.

To start the final frame, Scott Greenham was rotated in for Matt O’Connor between the pipes. Just 1:20 into the third, Kyle Flanagan chipped in his second assist of the game on an odd-man rush. Chris Rumble created the two-on-one chance and cut to the front of the net as Flanagan feathered a pass to his tape. Rumble lifted the puck over the blocker of Graham Hunt for the two-goal lead.

Down by a pair of goals with time running out, University of Ottawa’s Cody Drover slipped behind Binghamton’s defense and beat goaltender Scott Greenham on a breakaway late in the third period. The goal pulled the Gee-Gees back to a one goal deficit. However, with University of Ottawa’s net empty late in the game, the B-Sens won a crucial defensive zone draw to preserve the 3-2 win.

Binghamton continues its preseason schedule on Thursday, October 6, as they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to face the Rochester Americans at 7:05 p.m. The Senators play their only home preseason game at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday, October 8, against Rochester at 7:05 p.m.
