Sens Win Streak Snapped with 6-5 OT Loss in Hershey

HERSHEY, PA – Binghamton failed to hang onto a 5-1 second period lead as they fell 6-5 in overtime to the Hershey Bears.

Ryan Penny gave Binghamton the 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal 4:24 into the opening period.  Buddy Robinson earned the lone assist on Penny’s first American Hockey League tally.  Hershey evened the score just over a minute later when Nathan Walker notched his sixth of the year after he poked home a rebound past Chris Driedger 5:57 into the frame.  The B-Sens regained the lead when Matt Puempel scored his eleventh strike of the year with less than seven minutes to play in the period off a great cross-ice feed from Cole Schneider.  Binghamton headed into the first intermission leading their hosts 2-1 despite being outshot 12-9.

Binghamton came out firing scoring on two of their first three shots on goal to increase their lead to 4-1 while also ending Hershey’s starting goaltender Justin Peter’s night.  Travis Ewanyk tapped home his second of the season following a shot from Cole Schnieder 2:03 into the second before Robinson converted on a feed from Ryan Dzingel for his sixth of the year less than 40 seconds later.  Dzingel increased Binghamton’s lead to 5-1 with a wraparound attempt and less than five minutes to play in the middle period.  The Bears’ Walker added his second of the night 16:41 into the stanza before Travis Boyd trimmed Binghamton’s lead to two with 24 seconds reamining. The B-Sens took the 5-3 lead into the final intermission break.  Dan Ellis, who came into the game for Hershey after starter Justin Peters was pulled after Binghamton’s fourth goal, allowed one goal on 10 shots faced in the period.

Hershey’s momentum carried into the final period as the B-Sens saw their 5-3 lead erased beginning with Sean Collin’s redirect past Driedger 12:07 into the final period.  With the score sitting at 5-4 the Bear’s Garrett Mitchell skated in during a Binghamton line change and beat the B-Sens’ netminder for his fourth of the year with less than 1:12 remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Chris Bourque gave the Bears the bonus point in the sudden death frame as he scored 2:24 in to give the hosts the come-from-behind win.  Driedger stopped 26 of 32 shots faced in the losing effort with Ellis coming on in relief stopping 18 of 19 shots to earn the win.
