B-Sens Weekly

Friday, Feb. 27: Hershey 5, Binghamton 1
Shots: Hershey 25, Binghamton 29
PP: Hershey 1 for 4, Binghamton 0 for 3

Philipp Grubauer stopped 28 of 29 shots faced as the Hersey Bears defeated the Binghamton Senators 5-1.  Casey Wellman recorded a three point evening that included two goals to lead the Bears to their fourth victory in six meetings against the Senators this season.

Wellman opened the scoring 8:24 into the first period after he buried a feed from Jim O’Brien past Binghamton’s Scott Greenham for his 18th of the year.  Chris Brown doubled the Bears lead with less than eight minutes to play in the period after he managed to swipe home his own rebound for his 14th of the season to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.

Hershey added a pair in the middle frame to increase their lead to 4-0.  Wellman notched his second of the night with a wrist shot from the right of Greenham at 11:32 of the second before Tomas Kundratek tallied a power-play strike with less than two minutes to play to give the Bears the big lead heading into the final break.

Alex Guptill cut Hershey’s advantage to four goals just shy of the eight minute mark of the third, but Dustin Gazley moved the final score to 5-1 with his 12th of the year with just under 10 minutes to play in regulation.

Greenham finished with 20 saves and fell to 10-7-2 on the year.

Saturday, Feb. 28: Binghamton 2, Lehigh Valley 3 (OT)
Shots: Binghamton 27, Lehigh Valley 35
PP: Binghamton 0 for 3 , Lehigh Valley 1 for 4

Despite tallying two goals in the final period to force sudden-death, the Binghamton Senators fell 3-2 in overtime to their host Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Kevin Goumas opened the scoring 9:48 into the first period beating B-Sens’ goaltender Peter Mannino from the right faceoff circle off assists from Zack Stortini and Brandon Manning. The B-Sens headed to the locker room for the first intermission trailing their host 1-0 despite outshooting the Phantoms 11-9.

Following a scoreless second period, Ryan Dzingel put the B-Sens on the board after putting home a rebound off Phantoms’ goalie Anthony Stolarz pad for his first of the night at the 2:50 mark of the third period. Dzingel’s second of the night and 13th of the season came less than three minutes later when he awaited a sprawling Stolarz and backhanded the puck over the netminder to make it a 2-1 game. Brett Hextall forced overtime on a power-play goal at the 8:38 mark of the third.

Despite multiple chances at the end of the third, the teams had to go into overtime to determine a winner. Brandon Manning ripped a shot from the point to beat Mannino for his 10th goal of the year and give the Phantoms’ a 3-2 win.

Mannino finished with 32 saves on 35 shots to while Stolarz got the win with 24 saves on 26 shots.

Sunday, March 1: Binghamton 3, Albany 4 (OT)
Shots: Binghamton 27, Albany 35

The Binghamton Senators rallied in the third period but ultimately fell short, losing 4-3 in overtime to the Albany Devils.  Mike Sislo scored 33 seconds into the overtime frame to give the hosts the victory.

Cole Schneider opened the scoring 2:40 into the first period after putting home a rebound following an initial save by Albany Devils’ goaltender Scott Wedgewood for his 18th goal of the year. Paul Thompson tied up the game at the 14:11 minute mark of the first after poking home a loose puck over Mannino. Albany took the lead just over three minutes later when Darcy Zajac tipped in an initial shot from Raman Hrabarenka for his fifth goal of the year. The teams went to the first intermission with Albany leading the score 2-1 and shots 13-8.

The second period was looking to end with no changes in scoring until Tim Sestito pushed home his eighth of the season during the Devils’ power play with only three seconds remaining putting Albany up 3-1 heading into the final period.

The B-Sens made a comeback in the third period with two goals to force overtime. The first goal came from Buddy Robinson’s redirect off Chris Wideman’s shot from the blue line at the 6:10 mark. Carter Camper tied the game up just seconds after a five minute B-Sens power play expired off a feed from Derek Grant behind the Devils’ net with less than three minutes to play.

With the B-Sens on a residual penalty kill from the end of the third period, Sislo beat Mannino from the left faceoff circle dot just 33 seconds into the overtime giving Albany the 4-3 win.
