B-Sens Weekly

Friday, Dec. 26: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 0, Binghamton 3
Shots: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 31, Binghamton 40
PP: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 0 for 4, Binghamton 0 for 4

The Binghamton Senators returned from holiday break Friday and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-0 shutout of the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.  Ryan Dzingel scored twice for the B-Sens and Scott Greenham earned his first career American Hockey League shutout stopping all 31 shots faced.

Max McCormick opened the scoring 14:40 into the first period with his fourth tally of his rookie campaign.  On the forecheck, McCormick intercepted a Penguins outlet pass and maneuvered past one defender before backhanding the puck past Jeff Zatkoff for the unassisted goal.  The B-Sens outshot the Penguins 19-9 in the opening 20 minutes to take the 1-0 advantage into the intermission.

Binghamton once again dominated play in the middle period outshooting the visitors 13-5.  Zatkoff and Greenham both stonewalled the team’s scoring chances sending the game to the third with the score still 1-0.

Dzingel notched his first of the night 8:44 into the final period of regulation when he converted a perfect give-and-go sequence with Cole Schneider to make it 2-0.

Less than four minutes later, Darren Kramer sent an outlet pass to a streaking Garrett Thompson up ice.  Thompson carried the puck into the zone before sending a cross-ice feed to Dzingel who flipped the puck over Zatkoff’s right shoulder to make it a 3-0 B-Sens lead.

Greenham survived a late flurry of shots from the Penguins to preserve both the shutout and the B-Sens first victory over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.

Saturday, Dec. 27: Binghamton 4, Hershey 3 (OT)
Shots: Binghamton 31, Hershey 25
PP: Binghamton 1 for 4, Hershey 2 for 7

The B-Sens shook off a 2-0 first period deficit to rally for a 4-3 overtime win over its rival the Hershey Bears.  Greenham backstopped Binghamton to its second straight victory stopping 22 of 25 shots faced to earn his sixth victory of the year.

Dustin Gazely, who played briefly with Binghamton in 2012-13, scored a power-play goal 16:02 into the first to give Hershey the 1-0 lead.  Just over a minute later following a B-Sens defensive breakdown, the Bears made it 2-0 when Chris Brown flipped an uncontested shot from the point past Greenham to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage after one period of play.

Binghamton cut the Bears lead to 2-1 just 1:31 into the middle stanza when Fredrik Claesson sent a shot from the left faceoff circle past Pheonix Copley for his third goal of the year.

Just shy of the ten-minute mark the B-Sens tied the game 2-2 when Schneider put a feed from Carter Camper past Copley.

With just over two minutes to play in the period, Kris Newbury converted a power-play opportunity for Hershey to put the hosts up 3-2 heading into the third.

Binghamton received the equalizer with a power-play blast from Alex Grant with less than four minutes to play in regulation to force overtime.

Following a doorstop save from Greenham early in the 4-on-4 overtime frame Claesson skated the puck up ice and found Dzingel streaking in the neutral zone.  Dzingel skated the puck down the rightwing side, hesitated once and wristed the puck past Copley for his second overtime game-winner of the year.

Claesson finished with a goal and an assist while Shane Prince and Camper finished with three and two helpers respectively to lead Binghamton to their second straight victory.
