B-Sens Weekly

Wednesday, Dec. 17: Binghamton 3, Lehigh Valley 5

Shots: Binghamton 44, Lehigh Valley 30
PP: Binghamton 3 for 7, Lehigh Valley 2 for 6

The Binghamton Senators fell 5-3 in their first trip to Allentown after allowing three goals on the Lehigh Valley Phantoms first three shots of the night.  Petr Straka netted his seventh of the year just 15 seconds into the first before strikes from Jason Akeson at :27 and Andrew Gordon at :36 set a new fastest time for three goals allowed in B-Sens history.

Scott Greenham came into net to relieve Andrew Hammond following the goals and stopped the remaining three Phantom shots in the opening 20 minutes to send the teams to the locker room with Binghamton trailing 3-0.

Lehigh Valley started the second period on residual power-play time from a double minor high sticking call against the B-Sens Carter Camper.  With just nine seconds left in the man advantage, Nick Cousins scored his first of two goals on the night to make it 4-0 Lehigh Valley just 2:11 into the period.  The B-Sens power-play unit responded via a blast from Alex Grant at 14:06 into the frame to cut the Phantoms lead to 4-1 heading into the final period.

Chris Wideman’s power-play strike at 2:33 of the third period made it 4-2 before Cousins notched his second of the night 15:37 into the period to restore the host’s two-goal lead.  Derek Grant sent home a rebound on a power-play chance with less than 30 seconds to play to push the final to 5-3 Lehigh Valley.

The Phantoms Rob Zepp stopped 40 of 43 shots faced to earn his seventh win of the season.  Shane Prince finished with two assists to lead Binghamton.

Friday, Dec. 19: Springfield 6, Binghamton 5
Shots: Springfield 30, Binghamton 33
PP: Binghamton 2 for 2, Springfield 1 for 1

Despite holding a 4-1 lead five minutes into the second period, the Binghamton Senators fell 6-5 to the visiting Springfield Falcons in their first loss on a Friday night this season.  Hammond allowed four goals on 14 shots faced before Greenham came in allowing two goals on 16 shots faced in 20 minutes of play.

Danny New gave the B-Sens the 1-0 lead just past the seven minute mark of the opening period with an unassisted goal from just inside the blue line.  Alex Grant notched his third marker of the season on a power-play blast 11:54 into the period to give Binghamton the 2-0 lead.  The Falcons’ Luke Adam beat Hammond on a late period breakaway to make the score 2-1 heading into the first intermission break.

The B-Sens made it a 3-1 lead just 2:50 into the second when Patrick Mullen pushed home a loose puck on a Binghamton power play for his fourth goal of the year.  Less than three minutes later, Camper sent home a feed from Shane Prince to make it 4-1 Binghamton.  After Scott Munroe took over in net for Anton Forsberg, Springfield responded with three unanswered goals to end the period, as well as Hammond’s night, sending the teams to the locker room tied 4-4.

The B-Sens regained their one-goal advantage just 31 seconds into the third when Ryan Dzingel ripped a shot on a 2-on-1 breakaway over Munroe’s glove making it 5-4.  Springfield once again tied things up when Trent Vogelhuber took a pass from Mike Hoeffel in front of Greenham and sent home his fifth of the season at 2:29.  The Falcons controlled the puck for the majority of the final 20 minutes of play outshooting the B-Sens 14-5.  Following a delay of game call on Binghamton, Springfield converted on its lone power-play chance of the evening when Kerby Rychel beat Greenham with just over eight minutes to play in regulation.  Munroe stonewalled Binghamton’s remaining scoring chances to seal the come-from-behind 6-5 win.

Rychel finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Falcons offense while New notched a goal and assist to pace the B-Sens.

Saturday, Dec. 20: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 3, Binghamton 0
Shots: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 24, Binghamton 35
PP: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 0 for 4, Binghamton 0 for 5

The Binghamton Senators fell to the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in their final game before the holiday break.  The B-Sens allowed all three goals in the opening 20 minutes and failed to get their offense going all night.  Jeff Zatkoff stopped all 35 shots faced to earn his second shutout of the season.

Alex Boak opened the scoring 8:36 into the first with his first American Hockey League goal off assists from Matia Marcantuoni and Dominik Uher.  Just over four minutes later, Nick Drazenovic made it 2-0 Penguins when he beat the B-Sens Greenham clean over the blocker side for his fourth marker of the year.  Conor Sheary pushed Wilkes-Barre’s lead to 3-0 just 45 seconds later to give the visitors the three goal lead heading into the first intermission.

Despite outshooting the Penguins 27-13 over the final 40 minutes of play, no pucks managed to find the back of the net as the B-Sens were shutout for the second time in the 2014-15 campaign.

Greenham finished with 21 saves as his record fell to 4-4-1 in his 10th appearance in net this season.  Binghamton went 0-for-5 on the man advantage but kept the Penguins in check on its four chances.
