Comeback Bid Falls Short for Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators came up short 6-5 in search of its first victory over the St. John’s IceCaps at the Mile One Centre in Newfoundland.  Despite a late rally from the B-Sens, the IceCaps held on for the win in the first of back-to-back contests between the teams.

Things started quickly for the IceCaps when Carl Klingberg netted his first goal of the season just 1:24 into the first period.  Looking to flip the puck into the B-Sens defensive zone, Klingberg sent a soft backhanded flip towards Andrew Hammond that took a tricky bounce into the back of the net to make it 1-0 St. John’s.  The IceCaps made it 2-0 on a shorthanded goal by Patrice Cormier.  Following a turnover in the neutral zone, Cormier carried the puck in for an odd man rush beating Hammond high glove-side at 5:25 of the first.

The second period was an offensive battle with both teams recording three goals each.  Chris Wideman recorded his first of the season 3:51 into the frame to cut the IceCaps lead to 2-1.  St. John’s returned its two-goal cushion less than two minutes later when Chase Balisy converted off a B-Sens turnover.  The scoring frenzy continued less than 60 seconds later when Derek Grant put home a feed from Patrick Mullen at 5:32 to make it 3-2.  Binghamton tied the contest at 3-3 when Garrett Thompson pushed a one-armed shot past Hellebuyck at 8:55 of the period.  The IceCaps closed the period with a pair of goals, the first from Kris Fredheim at 12:35 followed by John Albert at 16:29 to give the hosts a 5-3 lead heading into the final intermission.

Brenden Kichton netted his first of the season 3:13 into the final period of play to increase the IceCaps lead to 6-3 and end Andrew Hammond’s night in goal for the B-Sens.  With Scott Greenham taking over goaltending duties, Binghamton charged back with two goals in the final five minutes of play. The first came from Buddy Robinson and then Cole Schneider made it a one-goal game with just 45 seconds remaining, but St. John’s held on for the victory.

Hellebuyck stopped 29 of 34 shots faced for the win, while Hammond made 20 saves in just over 43 minutes of play for his second regulation loss in as many games played.  Greenham stopped all eight shots faced in 16:30 of relief work.

The B-Sens faceoff against the IceCaps again tomorrow night at 6:00p.m. ET.   Binghamton returns to home ice Saturday, October 25, when they host the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at 7:05p.m.
