B-Sens Weekly

LAST WEEK…

Friday, Oct. 17: Portland 2, Binghamton 3
Shots: Portland 33, Binghamton 40
PP: Portland 1 for 9, Binghamton 0 for 4

The B-Sens earned its first win of the 2014-15 season Friday night 3-2 over the visiting Portland Pirates.  Binghamton used a shorthanded goal from Buddy Robinson and an even-strengthed marker from Shane Prince to jump out to a 2-0 first period lead.

Portland cut the lead to 2-1 just over three minutes into the second with a shorthanded goal from Jordan Szwarz.  Aaron Johnson returned Binghamton’s two-goal cushion with his first goal in a B-Sens uniform at 16:14 of the period to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage headed into the final period of regulation.

The Pirates once again cut the score to a one-goal margin when Henrik Samuelsson recorded his first career American Hockey League goal on a Portland power play six minutes into the third.  Binghamton’s defense along with goaltender Andrew Hammond clamped down for the remainder of the game to preserve the 3-2 victory.

Hammond finished with 31 saves while his Portland counterpart and former B-Sen Mike McKenna stonewalled 37 shots in a losing effort.

Saturday, Oct. 18: Binghamton 2, Syracuse 4
Shots: Binghamton 33, Syracuse 44
PP: Binghamton 1 for 3, Syracuse 0 for 2

Binghamton dropped its first road game of the year 4-2 on Saturday losing to former division rival the Syracuse Crunch.  The teams went into the final period of regulation knotted at two goals apiece, but back-to-back Crunch goals over a 1:10 span proved to be fatal for the B-Sens.

Cole Schneider gave Binghamton the early lead with his first goal of the 2014-15 season just under four minutes into the contest.  The B-Sens, who peppered Syracuse goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis with 19 shots in the opening 20 minutes, took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Syracuse rebounded in the middle frame with two goals in just 25 seconds to take a 2-1 lead.  Matt Puempel recorded the B-Sens first power-play goal of the season 8:51 into the period to send the teams to the locker room tied 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Third period strikes from Mike Blunden at 13:20 and Matthew Corrente at 14:30 moved the score to 4-2 for Syracuse.  Hammond, who started in net for the third consecutive game, picked up his first regulation loss of the season stopping 40 of 44 shots.  Gudlevskis turned away 31 Binghamton shots for his first win of the season.

Record: 1-1-1-0 (3 points)

Standings: Binghamton finds itself in last place in the East Division after three games played.  Hershey tops the division with a 3-1-0-0 record (6 points) through four games played while Lehigh Valley (2-1-0-0, three games played), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (2-2-0-0, four games played) and Norfolk (2-2-0-0, four games played) sit in a three-way tie for second with four points.

Wednesday, Oct. 22 @ St. John’s IceCaps (Winnipeg) – 6:00p.m. ET

Through five games played the IceCaps currently sit in a tie for third place in the Atlantic Division with a 1-2-2-0 record, good for four points.

Offensively St. John’s is led by center Eric O’Dell (two goals, two assists) and defenseman Will O’Neill (two goals, one assist) through the first five games.

Three goaltenders have made appearances for the IceCaps this season led by Peter Budaj, who has played in three games, going 0-1-1 with a 2.30 goals-against average and a 0.923 save percentage.  Netminder Connor Hellebuyck, who has the lone St. John’s victory, has seen action in two games this year (1-0-1) and has a 2.12 goals-against average and a 0.934 save percentage.

Saturday, Oct. 25 vs. Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers) – 7:05p.m. ET

Binghamton returns to home ice Saturday, October 25, when they host the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for the first time ever.  The Phantoms, formally headquartered in Glens Falls, replace the Syracuse Crunch in the East Division and will faceoff against the B-Sens 10 times during the regular season.

Center Scott Laughton, who was named the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending October 19, leads the Phantoms with four goals in three games played.  Teammate Nick Cousins has four points (1+3=4) through the same stretch of games.

Rob Zepp has been victorious in both of his appearances in goal for Lehigh Valley this season.  Zepp has allowed five goals total this year to go along with a 0.909 save percentage.

Sunday, Oct. 26 @ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins) – 4:05p.m. ET

Binghamton travels to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday for the fourth game in just six nights.  Despite holding a 5-3-0-0 record in the team’s eight-game series last season the B-Sens were bounced in the first round of the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs for the second consecutive year by its division rival.

The Penguins, who have already had 16 players register a point this season, are led by center Dominik Uher (0+3=3) and right winger Bryan Rust (2+0=2).

Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff has backstopped all four games this season for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton compiling a 2-2-0 record with a 2.72 goals-against average and a 0.871 save percentage.

SENS SNIPPETS…

Right winger Cole Schneider, who was scratched from the Friday, October 17, contest versus Portland, recorded a goal and an assist the next night in a 4-2 loss to the Syracuse Crunch.

Buddy Robinson recorded the first special teams point of the B-Sens 2014-15 regular season with his shorthanded tally Friday against Portland.  Robinson was tied for second on the team last season with two shorthanded goals scored.

Left winger David Dziurzynski was suspended three games by the AHL for an illegal check to the head of an opponent Saturday, October 18, in Syracuse.  As a result Dziurzynski will miss Tuesday and Wednesday’s games in St. John’s as well as Saturday versus Lehigh Valley.  Dziurzynski will be eligible to return to the lineup Sunday when the B-Sens travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
