Today Greg Watson sits down with binghamtonsenators.com for the first in a series of in depth interviews with your favorite players from the B-Sens.
Why and when did you begin playing hockey?
"Everyone in Canada plays hockey for the most part so it wasn’t really a choice – it was just something you did. My family is especially a big hockey family so I started skating when I was 2 or 3 years old and just went from there."
What is your most memorable moment in hockey?
"I’d say winning a gold medal with the under-18 Team Canada when I was 17 years old (summer of 2000). I have not been on too many championship teams so that was something I will always remember."
If you were not playing hockey now you would be……
"I would probably be in school somewhere near my home in Calgary with my buddies and studying criminology or something to do with athletics. Right now I am taking a business class and keeping my options open."
What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on the ice during a game?
"I have seen some funny things on the ice but bar none the funniest thing that happened this year is my buddy Brian McGrattan goes to jump over the boards from the bench and he gets his foot caught. He tripped and fell head first and we were all howling but he ended up scoring on that shift. He fell about three more times before he scored and then dropped his stick in the celebration. Nothing went right during the shift but he didn’t bug him much because he scored."
Why do you wear #23?
"Here in the States everyone thinks it’s because of Jordan, but back home I always wore 23 once I was able to pick my number and it was the number my dad wore. That is mostly where it got its beginnings – because my dad wore #23 when he played hockey."
What is your favorite thing to do or favorite place to hang out (besides State St.) in Binghamton?
"Honestly I just like to relax and recuperate when I can. Our whole team is a great bunch of guys. I have twenty best friends in the same city so I feel very fortunate that way and I can just go hang out with them. We go for dinner and just have a good time."
What do you like best about playing in Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena?
"I love how it is such a good homey atmosphere and when we are winning the fans are great – the best in the league."
A lot of guys have mentioned you as the team’s funniest guy….what have you done to deserve this? Have you pulled any memorable pranks?
"I don’t know. I just like to have good time and for the most part I like to keep things light and whenever I can get my own two cents in I do. There are a lot of witty guys on the team and we all have pretty much the same sense of humor so we get along well."
Your message to the B-Sens fans…
"We are a good honest hard-working group of guys that try our best to win game in and game out and I think we have something special in store for them at the end of the season."
