The Binghamton Senators outshot the Albany River Rats 18-4 in the third period but were unable to find the back of the net as the River Rats held on for a 3-1 victory at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Winger Greg Mauldin staked Binghamton to a 1-0 lead just minutes into the opening period. Mauldin took a feed from Matt Kinch on the left side of the crease and scooped it between the legs of netminder Michael Leighton for the power-play marker.
The River Rats responded when Keith Aucoin’s slap shot from the high slot found its way through traffic and deflected off netminder Brian Elliott’s glove hand.
Two minutes later the River Rats netted the game-winner with a power-play marker off the stick of Jamie Johnson. Aucoin fed Johnson a cross-ice pass which Johnson tapped into a wide open back door.
The River Rats added a late empty-netter to make it a 3-1 final. Netminder Brian Elliott stopped 25 shots in the losing effort.
