The Binghamton Senators and the Albany River Rats battled for almost three hours at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night, as Albany scored the game-winning goal at 7:59 of the final stanza to hand the B-Sens their first loss of the 2007-08 campaign.
Binghamton rookies Brian Lee, Alexander Nikulin and Ilya Zubov teamed for Binghamton’s lone goal off the night. Following a Lee one-timer from the high slot, Nikulin tapped the bouncing puck to an open Zubov inside the right face-off circle. Zubov scooped it past Albany netminder Michael Leighton to tie the game at 1-1.
The River Rats took the lead for good as Kirk MacDonald sent a cross-ice pass to a slashing Dave Gove. Gove took it top shelf over into the left corner of the goal.
The River Rats added a late empty netter to make it a 3-1 final. Glass stopped 26 shots in defeat, including several stops on 5-on-3 power plays.
The B-Sens take the ice again next Friday, as I-81 rival Syracuse comes to the Arena for a 7:05 contest.
