MORNING HEADLINES:

TIME RUNNING OUT ON BONVIE
Kelly Tomlinson, Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader
Dennis Bonvie isn’t planning his retirement. But at age 33, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton right wing is well aware that he’s closer to the end of his career than the beginning. That’s why Bonvie is likely to feel a greater sense of urgency at this time of year than most of his teammates. The AHL’s all-time leader in penalty minutes knows that this could be his last, best chance at the championship ring that’s eluded him for 13 seasons. “I’ve been runner-up a few times,” said Bonvie, who played in the Calder Cup finals with the Hamilton Bulldogs (1997) and the Penguins (2001). “That in itself was a lot of fun, but definitely not as much fun as we could have had. Fingers crossed, we’ll get it done this year, or at least get the opportunity to get it done.”

Dennis Bonvie's 93 Calder Cup Playoff games played are good for 13th on the AHL's all-time list, and most among active players.

MEETING WITH SCHOENFELD HELPED DAWES
Bruce Berlet, Hartford Courant
Nigel Dawes took some ribbing while standing in the Wolf Pack locker room Wednesday night looking like one of the Village People. Dawes wore the "2006-07 Playoff Drive Hard Hat Award," given to the star of the game as determined by a vote of the players. Dawes earned it with two goals and three assists in a 5-1 victory over Providence in the Atlantic Division semifinal opener, a far cry from early in the season. After being the Pack's second-leading goal scorer (35) as a rookie, Dawes, 22, started this season with the Rangers. Dawes, a fifth-round pick in 2003, scored his first NHL goal Oct. 21 in Toronto in a Hockey Night in Canada game, but he played only 53:54 in the first eight games and was scratched in seven of the next eight. In the game he did play, his ice time was 3:45.

Nigel Dawes was the Wolf Pack's leading scorer with 60 points in 65 games during the 2006-07 regular season.

CRAWFORD AIMS TO SHOW HE CAN CARRY POSTSEASON LOAD

Paul White, Virginian-Pilot
Must be playoff time for the Norfolk Admirals, who will visit Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tonight to begin their quest for the Calder Cup title. And the start of the best-of-seven first-round series means it's also Corey Crawford's time to establish himself as a game-changing goalie in the professional ranks. A case can be made that, in his second year with the Admirals, Crawford already has done just that. He finished the regular season with 38 victories, second in the AHL, and made a whopping 60 appearances. His teammates voted him and center Martin St. Pierre the Admirals' co-MVPs. Had they been allowed to pick just one Admiral, it's likely Crawford would have gotten the nod. "I can't imagine where we'd be without Corey," Admirals coach Mike Haviland said.

Second-year pro Corey Crawford was 38-20-2 with a 2.84 GAA, a .909 save percentage and one shutout in 60 appearances for Norfolk in the regular season.

STARS '06-'07: TALE OF THREE SEASONS
Lisa Colonno, Des Moines Register
A recent burst of offense from the forward line of Chris Conner, Paul Szczechura and Junior Lessard helped propel the Iowa Stars into the Calder Cup playoffs. Now comes their true test. "We've clicked so far, but playoffs are the important part," Conner said. The Stars open their West Division semifinal series against the Western Conference champion Omaha Knights tonight at Omaha Civic Auditorium. The Knights made offense hard to come by for the Stars and everyone else this season, allowing the second-lowest goal total in the 27-team American Hockey League.

Junior Lessard was Iowa's leading scorer in 2006-07 and Chris Conner earned 11 games with the parent Dallas Stars... Paul Szczechura joined the club in March following his senior season at Western Michigan University.

FROM CALDER TO STANLEY:
Antoine Vermette, who had 16 points in 20 career Calder Cup Playoff games for the Binghamton Senators (2003, 2005), picked up a goal and assist last night as Ottawa eliminated Pittsburgh with a 3-0 win in Game 5.

Two-time AHL All-Star Miikka Kiprusoff, graduate of the 2000 Calder Cup Playoffs, made 33 saves as Calgary defeated Detroit, 3-2, in Game 4 of their Western Conference quarterfinal.

Mike Ribeiro, who tallied nine points 12 Calder Cup Playoff games for the Quebec Citadelles (2001, 2002), assisted on the winning goal in Dallas's 1-0 overtime win over Vancouver.

Ryan Getzlaf, who made his professional debut during the 2005 Calder Cup Playoffs, scored the winning goal as Anaheim beat Minnesota, 4-1, to win their best-of-seven series in five games.

BY THE NUMBERS:
8 – Seconds needed for Dennis Kassian to score the winning goal in the Buffalo Bisons' 2-1 overtime victory over the Springfield Kings on Apr. 26, 1970, in Game 2 of a three-team round-robin league semifinal series... It remains the fastest OT goal in Calder Cup Playoff history; Shane Willis's goal for Albany last night came 10 seconds into OT, and ranks second on the list.

ON THIS DATE:
April 20, 2002 – Current Iowa Stars defenseman Marty Wilford scores 9:29 into the second overtime period, giving Hartford a 3-2 win over Manchester in the winner-take-all Game 5 of their first-round series.

April 20, 2000 – Chris Kenady scores four goals and assists on two others to lead Hartford to a 7-2 win over Springfield in a decisive Game 5.

April 20, 1994 – Mike McHugh's goal 49 seconds into OT gives Hershey a 4-3 win and a four-game sweep of Rochester... It remains the Bears' only series victory over the Americans in seven tries all-time.

April 20, 1958 – Hershey wins its first of two consecutive Calder Cups, defeating Springfield, 2-1, in Game 6 of the Finals.

April 20, 1952 – Ray Hannigan scores at 16:08 of overtime, giving the Pittsburgh Hornets the Calder Cup championship with a 3-2 win over the Providence Reds in Game 6.
